Hyundai’s compact Tucson crossover is a sharply styled rig with a well-appointed cabin that is roomier than most competitors. HTRAC all-wheel drive is standard across the line in Canada. While not as fun to drive as rivals from VW, Mazda and Honda, the Tucson is smooth riding and caters well to the needs of the compact SUV buyer. Natural Resources Canada gives the PHEV a 3.1 L/100 rating, although if driving less than 50 km per day you’ll be spending nothing on fuel. With the battery depleted, the PHEV is good for 6.7 L/100 km city, 6.8 highway and 6.7 combined.
The base Preferred ICE model gets forward collision mitigation with pedestrian, bicycle and junction-turning detection, adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, lane departure warning and lane follow assist, driver attention warning, auto high beams, blind spot collision avoidance assist, and rear cross traffic alert. Higher trims add head-up display and Highway Drive Assist. The Tucson gets a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it a top 5-Star rating.
As a brand, the 2025 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study has Hyundai sitting at 222 Problems Per 100 Vehicles (PP100), worse than the industry average of 202. That stated, Consumer Reports expects the current-gen Tucson to have average reliability when compared with other new vehicles.
The base Preferred arrives with a 12.3-inch centre touchscreen, comfy cloth seats (heated front), heated steering wheel and six speaker audio. Moving up the ranks nets a 12.3-inch driver display, wireless device charging, leather, heated rear seats, sunroof, power liftgate, upgraded audio and more. As with most Hyundai products, the Tucson features human-friendly ergonomics along with an easy-to-use infotainment system. Kudos goes to the voice activation system that recognizes commands well. The N Line Hybrid adds real leather/suede sport seats and aluminum pedals. The Ultimate hybrid or plug-in hybrid deliver near-lux appointments.
