As part of GM’s family of “don’t-say-Ultium” electric vehicles, it can be argued the Blazer EV serves as a more expensive variant of the Equinox EV, one with its own styling and interior design. Three different powertrain strengths and two different battery sizes are available.

Rivals come from within GM’s own house in the form of a less expensive but mechanically similar Equinox EV. Other rivals are the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Tesla Model Y. And don’t forget the nearly identical (under the skin) Honda Prologue.

What’s new with the Chevrolet Blazer EV for 2026?

The lone rear-wheel drive trim is gone this year. A dual-level charging cord is now standard, though GM offsets that expenditure by not including carpeted floor mats if all-weather ones are ordered as an accessory. Polar White tricoat paint replaces Iridescent Pearl tricoat on the options list. Buyers can also now delete the two-tone roof scheme on certain colours.

This model is available as either front- or all-wheel drive propulsion, depending on trim. Power is rated at 220 hp/243 lb-ft of torque on FWD trims, 300 hp/355 lb-ft of torque on non-SS AWD trims, and a towering 615 hp/650 lb-ft on the SS. The latter should hit 100 km/h in about 3.5 seconds despite weighing nearly three tons. As for battery capacity, everything has an 82-kWh pack except for the SS which is blessed with a 102-kWh honker.

As with most electric vehicles, the presence or absence of certain options can greatly affect total driving range, particularly wheel selection. Front-wheel drive models may get up to 502 kilometres of range on a full battery according to NRCan, unless equipped with 22-inch wheels in which case the estimate drops to 455 clicks. For all-wheel drive models, the LT and RS trims are rated at 455 km while the SS gets a suggested 486 km rating.

In terms of crash testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave this Blazer EV top marks for some tests, including updated tests of both the moderate overlap and side impact exams. However, the small overlap test, in which just a portion of the vehicle’s front corner slams into an immovable object at speed, received a score of Acceptable.

Testers at Consumer Reports give the Blazer EV a horrendous 5-of-100 score for predicted reliability, citing problems with software and glitches in various displays. This failing grade is reinforced by experiences described by several other testing outlets - including this author who weathered a week of glitches in a Blazer EV last year.

GM once tried to describe its gasoline-powered Blazer as a blend of SUV and Camaro, thanks in no small part to the funky cabin layout. This carries over to the EV, with a bank of ventilation registers positioned low - almost more for style than function. An enormous 17.7-inch touchscreen display is standard across all trims, though its redundant physical volume dial is moronically placed perfectly out of reach of the passenger who needs it.

Overall length of this electric vehicle is 192.2 inches (4,883 millimetres) from bumper to bumper. Its width, not including side mirrors, checks in at 78.0 inches or 1,982 mm. Height is about 65.0 inches (1,651 mm) with minor variations for trim and powertrain. Ground clearance is right around 8.0 inches or 200 millimetres.

The entry level model of this vehicle, an LT FWD, starts at $55,699 plus fees. Moving up to the RS is an extra $3,700. Adding all-wheel drive is a $3,500 proposition in either case and is worth considering. The SS, which is AWD only, starts at $71,199 though extra options can easily push the tab over 80 large.
