Trump proposed weakening protections against methane leaks.

As expected, he made the announcement at a campaign rally in Texas on Tuesday. He claims the move will “unleash an estimated 210 million additional barrels of oil.” He’s rolling back Biden-era rules that were supposed to generate up to $98 billion in benefits by limiting climate and health risks.

Election 2026

Some midterm races come down to ‘people who hate data centers’ versus ‘people who hate them even more.’

A bipartisan bill aims to hold data centers accountable for their energy use.

The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act would require data centers to report their electricity use, and allow utilities to charge them more for transmission costs. The bill aims to speed the construction of new infrastructure needed to meet soaring electricity demand, but won’t come up for a Senate vote until after midterm elections.

A Japanese real estate company is building a data center in an underground tunnel.

Mitsui Fudosan is planning the data center, which will consist of more than 10 shipping containers with servers, in the Suma Belt Conveyor in Kobe, Japan, Nikkei Asia reports. The company is also apparently planning more underground data centers.

If a data center is camouflaged in the woods, will anyone hate it?

Microsoft is expanding ‘biomimicry’ at its data centers as it faces more pushback from locals over construction, pollution, and noise.

California is the tenth state to legalize plug-in solar.

Residents can now easily install up to 1200W of solar panels without utility pre-approval. The DIY kits popular in Europe start at around $300 and feed the sun’s energy back into the home through standard wall outlets. More expensive kits with battery storage can help save even more money and provide backup power during a blackout. Either way, they should pay for themselves quickly in the state with the highest residential electricity rates.

Trump’s war on renewable energy is costing jobs.

The clean energy sector lost nearly 37,000 employees last year after Republicans cut funding and eliminated tax incentives for renewables, according to a recent report. And yet even after those losses, clean energy still employs 3.5 million workers compared to around 1.1 million people employed by oil, gas, and coal companies.

The iPhone Duo is manufactured with 60 percent renewable electricity.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are made with 50 percent renewables. Apple Watch, which Apple has had to stop describing as carbon neutral, reaches 100 percent renewable electricity. The company has a 2030 target for its suppliers to use “100 percent clean energy” for Apple production.

The Trump administration is giving a Google-backed nuclear power plant a $1.9 billion loan.

It’s to finance the restart of an Iowa plant that’s been closed since 2020. Last year, Google announced a partnership with NextEra Energy to reopen the site to help power the company’s AI data centers. But you won’t see that tidbit in the Energy Department’s press release today.

Solar power is having its toaster moment

The US is finally reclassifying plug-in solar as a household appliance to offset high energy costs.

Jackery and the Red Cross made an emergency backup battery.

The Explorer 2000 Plus v2 packs a 2kWh LFP battery and features a Storm Warning Function to automatically pre-charge ahead of severe weather, and an emergency reserve mode to ensure there’s always power available in case of disaster. It supports 800W of maximum solar input, 3600W of AC output, and up to 12kWh of battery expansion capacity. It launches on September 29th for $1,199, alongside a few other Jackery x Red Cross models. More specs in the pics that follow.

Among its DC and AC inputs and outputs is one 140W USB-C jack with AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) support.
It measures 366 x 255 x 272mm (14.4 x 10 x 10.7 inches) and weighs 18.8kg (41.4 pounds).

The planet is heating above a dangerous threshold, the UN confirms.

It says in a new report that global temperatures are probably going to climb 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial averages soon. We’ll have to cope with catastrophes the UN had previously hoped to avoid, like the “submersion of Small Island Developing States and low-lying coastal cities,” while continuing to cut down and capture CO2 emissions to prevent even worse damage.

A Microsoft-backed data center has reportedly been running on unpermitted generators.

Data center developers typically have to apply for permits to install generators that create local air pollution. The DataOne facility in New Jersey is the latest project accused of violating federal law by running on gas-fired generators without approval.

Jackery’s little workhorse power station looks great in white.

The $619 HomePower 1000 Plus V2 solar generator is now available in white or gray. It’s built around a 1kWh LFP battery that can be expanded to an impressive 11kWh of capacity. Its diminutive size, 1800W of sustained AC output, and up to 400W of solar (or car’s alternator) input makes it suitable for vanlifers, creator job sites, and even home backup to keep devices like the fridge and CPAP machine running during the next outage.

The US plans to throw out a key standard for radiation exposure at nuclear plants.

The standard currently requires reactors to keep radiation exposure to workers and the public “as low as is reasonably achievable.” The change is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to speed the buildout of new nuclear reactors expected to power AI data centers.
