Virginia Sen. Mark Warner announced Monday that his daughter Madison died after a decadeslong struggle with Type 1 diabetes and other undisclosed health issues. She was 36 years old.

In a post on his official Instagram account, Warner shared a brief letter from him and his wife, Lisa Collis, announcing Madison’s death, saying they are “heartbroken beyond words.”

“She filled our lives with love and laughter, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void,” the letter read. “We are grateful for the loving support of friends and family during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we navigate this profound loss.”

Madison was the eldest of three children, along with sisters Gillian and Eliza.

Warner has been a champion of those suffering from diabetes throughout his career. Recently, he advocated for inclusion of the PREVENT DIABETES Act to expand access to virtual health care services and the reauthorization of the Special Diabetes Program for Type 1 Diabetes to research how to prevent and cure the disease in February’s government spending bills. He also supported the provision in the Inflation Reduction Act 2022, which capped insulin at $35 per month for Medicare recipients.

“As the father of a Type 1 diabetic, I know how important consistent and reliable care is for patients’ health, but too many Virginians still struggle to get the care they deserve,” Warner said in a 2024 statement supporting the PREVENT DIABETES Act. “This legislation will save lives by expanding access to diabetes prevention programs virtually.”
