Eileen holds the distinction of being both the first person of Irish heritage as well as youngest person to hold this office. She is also a graduate of Helene Weber-Kolleg’s mentoring program “Vielfalt”, which is intended to help women from migrant backgrounds enter politics. Eileen will be joined by Mayor Deirdre Heckler of Breuberg and Mayor Michelle Wittler of Dausenau for a panel discussion with leading female politicians, which the Consulate is hosting in celebration of St. Brigid’s Day this year. They will speak to the influence family, friend and peer networks have had on their respective political journeys, the importance they ascribe to mentorship and much more. "There is no European voice without the cities!" said Rudi Vervoort, Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region at the high-level event under the auspices of Belgiums EU Presidency. Because I absolutely believe it to be true and necessary (!) that cities and metropolitan areas play a major role in shaping the EU's future, it was an upmost priority to contribute to the Brussels Declaration of European Mayors on behalf of the city of Frankfurt. Together, we set out the political priority for cities throughout Europe for this Presidency of the Council of the EU - and hopefully beyond! 🚀 The priorities are the following: 1. 🏠 Promoting the right to affordable, qualitative and sustainable housing 2. 🤝 Combating social and gender inequalities and promoting inclusion 3. 🌳 Fighting climate change, ensuring a healthy environment and restoring biodiversity 4. 🚇 Developing a safe, inclusive and sustainable mobility. 🗣 I believe in cities working together throughout Europe in order to make the most of our close proximity to our citizens, that, in essence, are citizens of the European Union. And as such they are immediately affected by European decision-making! In times of social incoherence we must communicate clearly, provide security and leadership. Especially in view of the European elections we must promote and strive for a well-functioning, democratic European Union. 💌 Here is my favourite line of the declaration: >> In implementing urban policies, we are committed to respecting and promoting the EU’s fundamental values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities.
