    Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
    @NYCMayor
    Yesterday, we gathered with hearts heavier than words can express to mourn a beloved son of the Bronx: 12-year-old Jacob Freytes. We stood alongside Jacob's mother, Migdalia Martinez, his family, friends, and with a community united in grief, to condemn the senseless act of violence that stole Jacob's life. No parent should have to bury their child. No family should have to endure this kind of pain. And no New Yorker should be asked to accept this violence as a cost of living in our city. We refuse to accept that. The greatest way we can honor Jacob's memory is by doing everything in our power to ensure no family experiences this unimaginable loss. That means showing up every day — on street corners and park benches, in schools and community centers — alongside police officers, violence interrupters, community organizers, faith leaders and neighbors. It means preventing conflicts before they become tragedies and continuing to break cycles of violence before another child is taken from us.
