  • 🕯️ On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, SANAD launches its 2025–2026 Annual Report. Established by World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) in Tunisia in 2013, SANAD provides free, survivor-centred support to people who have experienced torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment — combining legal assistance, medical care, psychological support, and social guidance with referrals to specialised services. This year's report covers May 2025 to April 2026, a period in which 177 new individuals entered the programme. Behind that number are alleged cases of police violence, mistreatment in detention, suspicious deaths, and institutional harassment — each with lasting consequences for survivors and their families. The report examines the context #SANAD operates in, documents the forms of violence it encountered this year, and traces its response through real case studies — illustrating what comprehensive, dignity-centred support looks like in a context where access to justice and protection is increasingly under strain. Real access to justice isn't only about legal recourse. It's about the ability to be treated, to stabilise one's life, and to look toward the future again.

  • 🌍 A €596 million boost for clean energy across the Mediterranean. On 24 April 2026, Member States gave a positive opinion at the EFSD+ Board on top-ups that will power the Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean-Tech Cooperation Initiative (T-MED) — a flagship of the Pact for the Mediterranean. This isn't just numbers. It's the financial backbone for what comes next: large-scale solar and wind, green hydrogen, battery storage, and stronger grid connectivity across the MENA region — alongside regulatory reform, skills development, and deeper EU-MENA industrial partnerships. Four international financial institutions are stepping up: 🔹 EBRD's "Hi-Bar" — already backing Egypt's first-of-its-kind 1 GW solar + 200 MWh battery storage plant 🔹 KfW/DEG's "Green Transition" — fueling green hydrogen and large-scale wind/solar with grid upgrades 🔹 IFC's "Better Futures" — unlocking private-sector renewables, including in fragile states 🔹 EIB's risk-sharing instrument — prioritising solar/wind projects with strong EU supplier links Scaling this kind of infrastructure requires patient, coordinated capital. This is what that coordination looks like in practice.

  • More young people across the Southern Mediterranean are finding their way back to education, training and work. Not by chance — but through coordinated support, community outreach and partnerships that occur them where they are. Last week, public employment services from seven countries visited Catalonia to witness the youth guarantee in action. The ideas they're bringing back will help shape public services for thousands of young people. This is one of the deliverables of the Pact for the Mediterranean.

  • A resilient private sector remains essential to Palestine’s recovery. On 8 June, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Commission launched advanced with the implementation of a €400 million financing facility for Palestinian micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as part of the EU’s €1.6 billion Palestine Recovery Programme. The initiative will boost access to finance, will support jobs, and will strengthen economic resilience at a critical time for the Palestinian economy. On 9 June, the EU brought together Palestinian business leaders, chambers of commerce, and European development finance institutions in Ramallah for a high-level Private Sector Roundtable. Discussions focused on improving the business environment, supporting Gaza’s early recovery, and advancing the reforms needed to unlock sustainable investment. Together, these initiatives demonstrate the EU’s commitment to supporting Palestinian businesses as a foundation for recovery, resilience, and long-term growth.

  • The MENA region holds some of the world's most abundant renewable energy resources. Mobilising them at scale requires the right partners around the table. On 9 June, Commissioner Dubravka Šuica convened EU private sector leaders — energy companies, investors, suppliers, industry alliances — for an Implementation Dialogue on scaling up renewable energy investments across MENA. Part of the T-MED Initiative, the EU's key delivery vehicle for clean energy cooperation with the Southern Mediterranean through 2035. ⚡ The transition starts with the conversation. #TMED #OneSeaOnePactOneFuture
