A recent study co-led by Dr. Bishoy Morris Faltas, a genitourinary oncologist at #NYPWeillCornell, and Dr. Fei Wang, a computer scientist at Weill Cornell Medicine, demonstrates the effectiveness of a new deep-learning model called GMLF designed to predict whether muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients might respond to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The current standard of care starts with chemotherapy and ends in surgery to remove the bladder, which has significant morbidity and mortality. GMLF combines tissue images and cell data to find unique biomarkers — such as alterations in certain genes — that help identify which patients may respond to chemotherapy well-enough to avoid surgery, allowing physicians to better personalize treatment plans. Dr. Andrew Chan, MD, neurological spine surgeon at #NYPOchSpine, is expanding the use of awake spine surgery to make the procedure more accessible for patients who do not tolerate general anesthesia well, including elderly patients or those with cardiac comorbidities. Awake spine surgery combines spinal and local anesthesia and medication to perform certain minimally invasive lumbar spine procedures, such as laminectomy or discectomy. The approach eliminates the cognitive and physical side effects of general anesthesia and intubation, and many patients go home the same day. On this episode of #AdvancesInCare, #NYPColumbia oncologist Dr. Meghna Trivedi discusses her research on taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy (TIPN), an often-painful and toxic side effect of taxanes, a common class of chemotherapy drug. Dr. Trivedi recently led a study to identify five factors that raise a person’s risk for TIPN to serve as a predictive model that can be used to inform treatment plans. She also shares details of new research she is spearheading to identify TIPN biomarkers to potentially prevent or catch the condition in its earliest stages so cancer patients can have a better long-term quality of life. #NYPWeillCornell gynecologic surgeon Dr. Tamatha Fenster MD, MS.partnered with Cornell Engineering to develop a new imaging software called smartHER MRI, which creates a 3D rendering of a patient’s uterus to better locate fibroids. Fibroids can grow in all directions on the uterus, which make them difficult to visualize through standard 2D MRI. The 3D image helps laparoscopic and robotic surgeons more precisely find and remove the fibroids, which reduces the risk of recurrence. As the official presenting sponsor of David Wright’s retirement weekend, NewYork-Presbyterian welcomed the New York Mets legend to #NYPQueens, where we celebrated this amazing milestone, dedicating Room Number 5 in our Pediatric Unit in honor of the Mets retiring his Number 5. David visited our pediatric patients and staff, and signed and gifted his jersey to the hospital. “Having the opportunity to talk some baseball with the kids, sign some autographs, and have room number five here at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens dedicated to my number five uniform, it’s a really cool honor.” Join us in congratulating David and thanking him for all he’s done both on and off the field by dropping a comment with your favorite David Wright memory. #LGM

When Dr. Michael Vitale, chief of pediatric spine surgery at #NYPMorganStanley of Children’s Hospital of New York and #NYPOchSpine, started the Safety in Spine Surgery Summit, his vision was to bring together spine experts from around the country to collaborate on best practices that improve patient outcomes. This May marked the 10th annual summit and a decade of shaping various safety guidelines that have since been adopted across the field. Among the speakers were several #NYP experts, including Dr. Lawrence G. Lenke, MD, summit co-chair and co-director of #NYPOchSpine, (pictured, right, with Dr. Vitale), who presented the latest insights on topics that included machine-learning risk factors in intraoperative neuromonitoring, robotic surgery safety, and vertebral body tethering.
