Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Duolingo is the most downloaded education app in the history of the App Store and in 2019 became the top-grossing education app worldwide. We set out to do something altogether different in the learning space. Learning a new language is hard; we believe it should be fun. We use bite-sized lessons that feel like playing a game to keep our learners motivated. Learning a new language can also be expensive, and because we believe it should be free, we made it so. Duolingo has been named to: BuiltIn's Best Places to Work (2023), Fast Company Best Workplaces for Innovators (2022), Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Education Company (2022), among others.

💡 Product Managers: How do you come up with innovative, long-term Product ideas outside of your day-to-day work? We have a Duolingo ritual for you to steal: ProductFest. ProductFest is a one day, in-person product brainstorm with senior leadership focused on identifying big product bets. We started ProductFest because developing a high quality product requires high quality time together to ensure the long term bets we are taking are the right ones. We just wrapped our most recent one and came up with at least ~20 ideas we’d all be excited to pursue across teams. We have a lot of useful learnings about how to run ProductFest. Here’s the framework we used in case your Product team wants to leverage. ⬇️

"Performance review" are two words that can be really scary. Here are some tips from one of our Engineering leaders on how to make these words less scary, particularly if the result is different from what you expected. Some common “scary” scenarios: • You self nominated but didn’t get promoted • You received “meets expectations,” but you feel you earned “exceeds expectations” • You received “needs improvement,” but you were expecting to receive “meets expectations” Here are 3 phases that can help you navigate this: 🧠 Phase 1: Process the feedback Feel your feelings. Acknowledge them. And remember: one rating doesn’t define you. 🗺️ Phase 2: Make a plan Build a clear, achievable roadmap that incorporates feedback and aligns with your role manager. 📈 Phase 3: Execute and track Take ownership, share weekly updates, and adjust when needed. Growth is a team effort, so don’t do it alone. Hope this helps performance reviews be less scary! We could all use some support in today's job market. Reshare to help your network! 💚

We have some pretty awesome benefits at Duolingo if we do say so ourselves. Why? Because taking care of our employees is THAT important to us. We have all of the standard benefits of course, but we ALSO have a few bespoke ones that are core to our mission and values: 🌍 DuoTrips: A five day, all-expenses paid trip (and week off work!) for Duos (employees) who complete our internal Language Challenge in that country’s language. We do these trips to develop deeper empathy for our learners but putting ourselves in their' shoes. Current DuoTrips are to Paris, Mexico City, Berlin, with the newest destination of Beijing! 🏡 Mortgage benefit: $10k bonus to help our Duos with a down payment on their first house in Pittsburgh. We don’t want to turn Pittsburgh into a renters’ market. We want to invest in and give back to our community. 🏼 Clubs: $100 a month to spend on any of our 150+ clubs like Club Games, Club Nails Did, Club Crafting, or Club Bagelingo, Our clubs are important to us because they make sure that every Duo is able to make meaningful Duolingo connections. Which bespoke Duolingo benefit is your favorite?!
Being in office is important to us because there’s something powerful 💪about us all being together. That’s why we are in-office Monday-Thursday and WFH on Fridays. It helps us move faster, build trust, and maintain a culture that’s uniquely Duolingo: one that combines creativity, curiosity, and just the right amount of chaos. Plus we feel an even greater sense of camaraderie in our mission when we’re together in person.

If you’re a new grad, you’re stepping into one of the toughest job markets in recent history. That’s a big challenge. At Duolingo, we’ve been cheering on new grads since day one, and we want to share some advice to help you take those first steps with confidence. 💡Repost to help your network - resources like these can make all the difference.
Every Fall, we welcome a big batch of new grads to Duolingo. They always ask me how to succeed here. This is what I usually tell them: 1. Don’t be a jerk No massive egos, and no telling different people different things to get what you want. Duolingo has an allergic reaction to toxic behavior, and our culture quickly identifies and rejects it. 2. Build the Solution Early on, we didn't have a company blog. Two engineers handled this differently: Engineer A: Spent months complaining to me. "We don't have a blog! What are you going to do about it?" Engineer B: Came to me once and said, "I noticed we don't have a blog, so I started one." Engineer B did way better at Duolingo. The lesson: If something bothers you, you generally have the freedom here to fix it. We're still figuring lots of things out, and if you see a problem, you can actually do something about it here. 3. Company Mission First When making decisions, think in this order: -What's best for the company’s mission -What's best for your team -What's best for you This doesn't mean work yourself to death. But people who focus on what's good for Duolingo’s mission tend to do better than people who are purely selfish. 4. Use Our Product Obvious but important: actually use Duolingo. I still report bugs. How else can you improve something you don't understand? 5. Success = Luck + Hard Work I recently asked a founder friend what it takes to build a successful company. His answer: "65% luck, 35% hard work for about two decades." That matches my experience. You don't have to be the most brilliant person. You just have to show up and keep going until luck finds you. If you stick with it, you’ll surprise yourself with how far you can go. To the 42 New Grads who joined us this year, welcome to Duolingo. I’m excited to see what you’ll accomplish here!
