Generative AI is killing graduate jobs....or is it? There's been a lot of press recently about the impact of AI on early careers, with some pointing to the use of automation as the main reason why grad jobs are in decline. But is this really the case or is there more to the situation than the headlines suggest? In the latest edition of our newsletter, Hays experts give you the lowdown on what's really happening, as well as advice to organisations and jobseekers on how to turn this challenge into an opportunity. What do you think is happening? As always, we'd love to hear your take in the comments.

Let’s be clear. AI isn’t coming, it’s already here. And it's changing the word of work, forever. It’s rewriting job descriptions, reshaping industries and redefining what it means to be employable. For jobseekers, especially those early in their careers, the question isn’t whether AI will affect your future, it’s how will you stand out in the age of AI? The good news is that whilst AI can do a lot, it can’t do you. Here's how to stand out in the age of AI: ▪️ Prioritise your human skills - improving communication, adaptability, critical thinking and collaboration skills are crucial in the era of AI. ▪️ Improve your AI fluency - build a portfolio of tangible examples where you used AI, mentor others and inspire management by using AI to solve business problems. ▪️ Find your niche - pick a career or specialism where human input is essential. If you're looking at tech roles, cyber security, cloud computing and data analysis stand out. Want to learn more? Check out the link in the comments

“AI is killing graduate jobs.” That headline’s been doing the rounds lately, and like most headlines, it’s not the full story. Yes, AI is reshaping the landscape, but it’s not the only force at play. Tougher market conditions and shifting economic dynamics are making their mark across all levels of employment. What is clear is that AI is no longer niche. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, Copilot, and Perplexity aren’t nice-to-haves, they’re the new Excel — if Excel could write your emails, summarise your research, and make you sound smarter than you are. Graduates who know how to prompt, analyse, create and collaborate with AI are already ahead of the pack. But let’s not panic. We’re still early in the AI adoption curve. Jobs aren’t vanishing, they’re evolving. As my colleague James Milligan told the Guardian: “Jobs don’t die, they evolve.” And he's right. The real issue? Most education systems aren’t set up to teach the AI skills that today’s workplace demands. That means too many grads are starting their careers on the back foot. And it’s not just graduates. I’m pushing my own teams (and myself!) to play with it, to use it to get sharper, stronger, or to be clever about what AI can take off their plate so they can focus on the high-value work only they can do. Because it’s not that AI is coming for their jobs. It’s how we use it and evolve with it that will set us up for success. If we want to unlock the full potential of this transformation, we need to embed AI learning across disciplines and invest in upskilling at every career stage. If AI is "the intern that never sleeps", are you and your teams making the most of it? #AI #FutureOfWork #DigitalTransformation
