One of the happiest chapters of my life took place in a squatter settlement in the Sonoran Desert in California.
Was incredibly tan, walked 10+ miles every day, bathed in a hot spring, lived off oranges, dates, hot dogs, salsa, and Tecate beer. Read a dozen books a month. Rose with the sunrise and slept with the sunset -- got incredibly good sleep. Nightly bonfires with interesting characters from all over the world.
Very little that I have ever done in my life has compared with regards to overall well-being.
Sure, there was violence occasionally, everyone was on welfare, tweakers were sneaking onto a live-fire military bombing range to steal scrap metal for meth money, there was zero law enforcement, and once in a while I found human bones in the desert (illegal immigrants who died of exposure) -- but overall, it was a truly happy and enjoyable time, and I'm not even kidding.

Honestly being a bum in California is probably better than working in pennsylvania
