It's currently fashionable to hate winter, complain about the snow, etc, but I don't think it's going to last.
Really, it wasn't that long ago that people weren't quite so precious about snow and overcast and all that.
Automobiles and 9-to-5 jobs have certainly made winter uniquely depressing, and that hasn't helped. Commuting in darkness twice a day, with no sun-lit off-work time, on dangerous, icy roads -- that sucks.
Combine that with smartphone culture and the overall death of IRL community, and it gets bleaker still. Then with the general weakness of the body that is promoted by our luxury way of life, which softens people so terribly that they cannot endure a cold wind or a day out skiing -- and yeah, winter's gonna be awful.
My hope is that AI slop will ruin the internet, force people to log off, and that idiotic governmental regulations combined with surveillance tech and built-to-fail computerized engines will kill car culture.
From there, IRL community sprouts back, the 9-to-5 commuter model dies, people harden up a little, and boom, it's no longer fashionable to be a sissy about the winters. Maybe I'm being optimistic, but here's hoping.
- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, and I don’t remember nearly as much bitching about the weather there as there is today.
- "My hope is that AI slop will ruin the internet, force people to log off..." AI accelerationism, but for slop!
