CPJ welcomes the significant vote by 47 U.S. Senators on September 29, calling for justice and accountability for the killings of civilians, including Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, by Israeli forces and settlers.
More than four years after Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli Forces in May 2023, her family is still waiting for justice and accountability.
Abu Akleh’s murder was not an isolated incident; rather it embodies a deadly pattern in which Israeli forces have been targeting and killing journalists in connection with their reporting for decades.
Those killings have dramatically spiked since October 7, 2023, during which Israel has killed at least 189 Palestinians in Gaza.
The pursuit of justice and accountability must continue to ensure the impunity enjoyed by Israel for crimes against journalists is brought to an end. CPJ will continue to press for that accountability.

Tonight, 47 Senators supported my resolution to get accountability for the 9 Americans killed on the West Bank & for Palestinians who face injustices daily. That's more support than we've ever had in this fight.
Republicans blocked us, but we won't stop until we get justice.
