The first district attorney to try the students’ case, Jeff Rosen, was ultimately removed after the students’ legal team submitted evidence that he had used their pending case to fundraise for his re-election, showcasing his work against so-called “antisemitism” to donors.This is a win for not only these students — who had to put their lives and organizing for Palestine on hold — but the entire student movement.As defendant Amy Zhai said, “I can continue to be involved in the Palestine movement in ways that were... curtailed by also being actively a defendant in a criminal case. [The prosecution] was intended to silence speech about Palestine, and... they have failed.”“People still very much care about Palestine, but I think they are afraid, and reasonably so, because of everything that’s happened with the escalation of repression over the past two years. It takes victories like this one to encourage people to turn their beliefs into action.”We celebrate alongside these students and share their hope that this win encourages others to keep organizing and speaking out.
