Early in 1980, AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott passed away, at the age of 33, from acute alcohol poisoning.
Less than six months later, on this date in 1980, the band released "Back in Black," their seventh studio album and the first featuring lead singer Brian Johnson, whom the band hired to replace Scott.
The album cover was designed in all "mourning black" as a tribute to their former lead singer.
The album was a worldwide smash, selling over 50 million copies, and remains number two on the list of all-time best-selling albums, behind only Michael Jackson's "Thriller."
