On 25 August 2026 Israeli authorities - security forces and municipal staff, along with an elected official - forcibly and unlawfully entered the UNRWA Kalandia Training Centre (KTC) in occupied East Jerusalem and forced out UNRWA staff. Israeli authorities have remained inside the premises and begun renovation and clearance works.
Yesterday, on 28 August, Israeli security forces seemingly vacated the KTC. They left behind damage to UN assets and signs of looting.
At the time of the unlawful entry, the KTC was being prepared for the new academic year, expecting to receive 340 students from across the West Bank next week.
The KTC consists of tens of training workshops, classrooms, dormitories, and administrative buildings. It holds valuable tools and equipment for practical vocational training. UNRWA's assets in the KTC are worth more than US$5 million.
UNRWA and its international partners have made considerable investments into the KTC over the past years - providing training equipment, enabling infrastructure improvements, and ensuring maintenance and repairs. Such project activities were ongoing at the time of the forcible entry.
UNRWA emphasises the obligation of protecting the KTC and its assets, given its vital role in providing Palestine Refugee youth with education and skills for their future. The Government of Israel has a legal obligation to ensure that its actions are reversed without delay and to prevent the recurrence of any similar actions.
