U.S. officials increasingly see a Chinese invasion of Taiwan before 2028 as unlikely despite Xi Jinping’s 2027 military readiness target, citing delays linked to China’s anti-corruption campaign and Beijing’s interest in Taiwan’s 2028 election, according to Reuters.
U.S. officials say China might consider using force against Taiwan in 2028 and beyond if the DPP wins a fourth consecutive term, particularly if Lai Ching-te is re-elected. One official said that scenario would make 2028 “pretty sporty.”
