Set up garage door detection with your Nest camera

Garage door detection is a feature that's currently supported in the US and Canada only. If you have a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription, you need to upgrade to a Google Home Premium subscription.

Garage door detection improves your awareness of your home by monitoring the current state of your garage door. If your Nest Camera supports this feature, you can get Google Home app  notifications whenever your garage door opens, closes, or is left open. Tap the notification and follow the instructions to get started.

Step 1: Meet all camera and app requirements
To use garage door detection, you need:

Important: To use garage door detection on your Nest Cam (battery), you must connect it to another power source.

  • The Google Home app installed on your mobile device.
    • You must have a Google Account or a migrated Nest account.
Step 2: Meet all garage and garage door requirements
  • You need one of these garage door types:
    • Sectional overhead garage door
    • Tilt-up overhead garage door
    • Two single doors or one set of double doors
    • One set of double doors and one single door (3-car garage)
  • Your garage door should be made of any of the following materials:
    • Wood
    • Fiberglass
    • Metal

Tip: Large garage door windows or obstructions in the camera's view, like large automobiles, can reduce the accuracy of detection.

Step 3: Set up your Nest camera to detect your garage door
Your Nest Cam detects when a garage door is closed, opened, or left open. When you mount your camera for garage door detection, ensure it has a clear and uninterrupted line of sight to your garage door(s).
If you add a camera to a room with "Garage" in the name, you get a prompt to set up garage door detection. The same happens if you add a camera in a room with "Garage" set as the location.
If you set up your camera inside your garage If you set up your camera outside your garage
  • Set up your camera at least 10 feet away from the garage door(s).
  • Avoid having your camera's view affected by direct, intense sources of light.
  • Make sure at least 80% of each garage door is visible in your camera's view.
  • Avoid pointing your camera towards the garage door at an extreme angle.
    • Large windows or side doors can possibly trigger false events.
  • Make sure the vertical section of the garage door is visible in your camera's view.
  • Make sure the garage door takes up at least 30% of your camera's view.
  • Avoid pointing your camera at your garage door from a high angle.
Support for garage door detection at night reaches up to 24 feet (7.3 meters) away. To achieve the maximum range, you can turn off your garage lights and turn on your Nest Cam's night vision.
