How to use Google Home Premium
Cameras
Nest camera models offer varying levels of person detection. You can get “Person seen” or “Familiar face” alerts.
If you have a Nest doorbell, you can also get package alerts when a package is dropped off or picked up in its view.
Some cameras can send different alerts for different sounds. With Google Home Premium, these cameras can tell the difference between a person’s speech and a dog’s bark. You can pick which sounds you want to get alerts about and which ones your camera should ignore.
Speakers and displays
Important:
- Emergency calling and glass break alerts aren’t available in the Nest app.
- Google Home Max doesn’t support sound detection.
Google Nest and Home speakers and displays in the US can detect sounds like smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and breaking glass. If detected, Google Home Premium sends an alert to your Home app that allows you to use Emergency calling with the Home app if necessary.
If you set up the Nest Cam on Nest Hub Max, you can also get notifications in the Nest app. Learn how to set up your Nest Cam on Nest Hub Max.
Sound detection
With Sound detection enabled, any home member can get a notification, hear a short recording, or listen live on their device. Learn how to set up Sound detection on your camera.
If you have a speaker or display, learn how Sound detection works for speakers and displays.
You can create your own custom zones to cover the areas you want to be notified about. When there's important activity in a zone, Activity Zones let your camera send alerts and mark your video history timeline.
Learn how to set up and use Activity Zones. You can use the Google Home app to contact an emergency call center closest to your home with Emergency calling, even when you're away. From the Activity tab, make emergency calls during emergency events. To use Emergency calling, you must complete the setup in the Home app.

- Your video history shows only clips of these motion or sound events. During times with no detected events, it shows blank areas.
- Event video history isn't available for 1st gen Nest Aware. 24/7 video history is only available for wired Google Nest cameras and Nest doorbells. It isn’t available for Nest Doorbell (battery), even with optional wired installation.
You can watch and save video clips of activities with the Standard plan of Google Home Premium’s 30 days of event video history. Upgrade to the Advanced plan and get 60 days of event video history, plus up to 10 days of 24/7 continuous video history.
How many days of event video history and 24/7 video you get is based on your Nest camera model and Google Home Premium subscription. For more information about video history, go to Event and 24/7 video history.
If your Nest camera captures a moment you want to remember forever, like your baby's first steps, Google Home Premium lets you save and share it.

Ask Home
You can use streamlined smart-home controls, get information about your home's status and history, and create personalized automations. It remembers your preferences and personalizes interactions.
Nest cameras and doorbells help show you what happens at home, but the technology isn't perfect. We try to make our camera events as accurate as possible, but issues like these can happen:
- A picture can be confused with a real event. For example, a t-shirt with a picture of a dog might cause an animal detection event.
- A person who crawls on the ground can be misidentified as a pet.
- Close relatives can be misidentified.
