Neil Ross is a British actor and voice actor. He is known for his work in American animated television series and video games, including G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Voltron, and The Transformers.[1][2] He has also provided voices for films, including Back to the Future Part II, Babe, and Quiz Show.

Ross has worked as an announcer and narrator for television programs and networks. He served as the announcer and voice of the Whammy on ABC's revival of Press Your Luck from 2019 to 2023.[3] He was co-announcer for the 75th Academy Awards in 2003 and announcer for the 56th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2004.[4] He has also narrated episodes of A&E's Biography and episodes of NOVA on PBS.[4]

Early life

Ross was born in London, England, and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His family later moved to California, where they settled in San Diego.[4]

Ross began working in radio after finishing school. His first position was at KMUR in Salt Lake City, Utah. He subsequently worked at KORL, KGMB, and KKUA in Honolulu, Hawaii, before joining KCBQ in San Diego in 1969. He later worked at KYA in San Francisco and KMPC in Los Angeles. He made his final radio broadcast in 1985.[4]

Voice acting

Ross began working as a voice actor after moving to Los Angeles in 1978. His first credited role was as a salesman in an episode of Richie Rich, produced by Hanna-Barbera.[4]

He has provided voice-over work for television and radio commercials for companies including Wal-Mart, AT&T, Volkswagen, Coca-Cola, Mattel, Goodyear, Disney, Hoover, Anheuser-Busch, Southwest Airlines, and Kellogg's. He has also provided promotional announcements for networks including CBS, NBC, ABC, TBS, and Fox Kids. Ross served as a promotional announcer for Game Show Network for five years.[4]

Among his animated roles, Ross voiced the Green Goblin and Norman Osborn in Spider-Man: The Animated Series.[2] In G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, he voiced Shipwreck, Buzzer, Monkeywrench, Dusty, Thunder, and Heavy Metal.[1] In Voltron: Defender of the Universe, he voiced Commander Keith and Pidge.[2] He also voiced Springer, Hook, Slag, and Bonecrusher in The Transformers, reprising these roles in The Transformers: The Movie (1986).[1]

Announcing and narration

Ross was co-announcer for the 75th Academy Awards telecast in March 2003 and announcer for the 56th Primetime Emmy Awards telecast in September 2004.[4] He has narrated numerous episodes of Biography on A&E and episodes of NOVA on PBS. One of his NOVA projects, Mars – Dead or Alive, was nominated for an Primetime Emmy Award in 2004.[4]

In 2019, Ross became the announcer and voice of the Whammy character on the ABC revival of Press Your Luck, hosted by Elizabeth Banks. He remained with the program through its fourth season in 2023.[3]
