Namsor

Privacy policy

All information going in/out of NAMSOR API is logged in order to improve NAMSOR services, i.e. to improve the accuracy of NAMSOR sociolinguistics algorithms based on machine learning, reinforced learning and other artificial intelligence techniques.

NAMSOR, on the explicit USER's request, provides a specific anonymization functionality, translating personal names into non-reversible SHA-2 digests (header X-Anonymizer = SHA-256). In that case, no personal information is retained by NAMSOR, and yet NAMSOR can act as a trusted provider in Three Way relationship between the USER and a THIRD PARTY designated by the USER. For example, in the use case of analyzing sensitive data on patients (for clinical trials or epidemiology studies), employees or clients (for patterns of discrimination).

Privacy policy description

NAMSOR don't sell, rent or trade personal data. NAMSOR carry out demographic studies on names to enhance comprehension of global names. NAMSOR carries applied research in onomastics (the Science of Proper Names, a branch of Sociolinguistics).

NAMSOR may collect personal or non-personal identification information such as cookies from any USER.

The USER grants NAMSOR with the rights to register and to operate its data, including personal data. The USER is granted by NAMSOR to access and to correct personal data. Any USER is also granted a right to opt out of his personal data treatment.

Privacy Policy for Namsor Google Sheets Add-on

This Privacy Policy describes how the Namsor Google Sheets Add-on (“Add-on”) accesses, uses, and protects Google user data and other personal data.

Google user data we access

The Add-on requests the following Google OAuth scopes:

  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/spreadsheets.currentonly – read/write the currently open spreadsheet to process selected cells and write results.
  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.container.ui – render menus and sidebars within Google Sheets.
  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.external_request – send selected data to Namsor’s API and receive results.
  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/userinfo.email – retrieve the user’s Google account email only if the user chooses to create a Namsor account.

How we use Google user data

  • Email: used only if the user opts to create a Namsor account; combined with a password and full name chosen by the user.
  • Spreadsheet content: for columns explicitly selected by the user (e.g., first name, last name, local context, full name), data is sent to Namsor’s API to compute attributes such as gender, origin, U.S. Census race/ethnicity, caste group, ethnicity, and country of residence. Returned results are written back into the spreadsheet cells chosen by the user.

Sharing, transfer, or disclosure

  • Selected spreadsheet data transits to Namsor servers to perform machine-learning analysis and return results.
  • Namsor does not share, transfer, or disclose Google user data to third parties.

Data protection

  • All data in transit uses HTTPS/TLS.
  • User accounts are encrypted.
  • If request logs are stored for ML improvements, they are encrypted at rest using AES on private servers with restricted access.

Retention and deletion

  • By default, Namsor may retain logs of submitted requests to improve its models.
  • Users can change retention/learning behavior in their account:
    • Disable ML learning: set learnable = false in “Enhance privacy”.
    • Anonymize submissions: set anonymized = true to irreversibly anonymize with SHA.
  • Users can delete data or their account at https://namsor.app/my-account/ (Settings).

API key storage

  • The API key entered in the Add-on sidebar is stored only in Google Apps Script UserProperties (scoped to the user’s Google account).
  • The key is sent to Namsor servers solely to authenticate and execute API requests.

Children's data

The Add-on is not directed to children under 18 and does not knowingly collect children's personal information.

Changes

We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date reflects the latest version. Material changes will be communicated where required.

Additional disclosures for Google OAuth verification

  • We request the minimum scopes needed for the Add-on to function.
  • Google user data is not used for advertising.
  • Google user data is not sold or shared with third parties.
