That’s the insight driving Dr. Matthew Crowley’s Ph.D. research at Liberty University, where he examined over 1,000 Y Combinator startups (2013–2017) to uncover how gender and ethnic diversity among founders, cohort peers, and alumni networks influences startup survival over five years. 📊 The challenge? While Crunchbase provided company data, it lacked demographic details. To bridge that gap, Crowley turned to the NamSor API, which uses founder names to infer gender and ethnicity — transforming raw name data into powerful, structured insights. 🔍 How NamSor Powered the Research NamSor allowed Crowley to: ✅ Identify gender and ethnicity across thousands of startup founders ✅ Create composite diversity scores using Blau’s Index ✅ Analyze the relationship between diversity and survival via Cox regression modeling 💡 What He Discovered 🟠 Founding teams with high gender and ethnic heterogeneity were twice as likely to fail within five years 🟢 But diverse alumni networks shifted from risk to resilience boosters roughly 2.5 years post-graduation Diversity’s impact isn’t static — it evolves over time and depends on network dynamics. 📣 Key Lessons for Accelerators and VCs Matthew’s findings highlight the need for: Thoughtful program design that supports diverse teams early Leveraging tools like NamSor for demographic insight at scale Recognizing that diversity without support can unintentionally raise early-stage risk By using NamSor for automated gender and ethnicity enrichment, Crowley turned a raw data limitation into a strategic research advantage — paving the way for more inclusive, evidence-based accelerator design. 📬 Interested in the research?
