Impacts of Orchard Grazing on Soil Health, Food Safety, and Pest Control
Almond, pistachio, and walnut growers plant cover crops between rows of trees to shield soils from eroding rains, suppress weeds, add nutrients, and build more resilient, healthy soils. The mowing of cover crops is often accomplished with tractors, but using small grazing animals instead can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as save time and labor while

Extending Knowledge on Biosecurity in Small-scale and Backyard Systems in the United States
The number of small-scale and backyard operations has increased in the United States during the past decade, but there is currently a lack of outreach efforts and readily-available educational materials targeting these farming systems. We developed a webinar series on biosecurity to provide training for small-scale and backyard producers, and training tools that can be used by local veterinarians and extension educators to disseminate knowledge and consistent recommendations more effectively. Fewer people attended the webinars than registered, suggesting a gap between interest in biosecurity and commitment to the topic. Participants in the webinar series reported a high level of satisfaction and a significant increase in knowledge.
Risk factors associated with the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in manured soils on certified organic farms in four regions of the United States
Biological soil amendments, including raw or untreated manure, are currently used to improve soil fertility, especially in organic operations that prohibit u...

Multi-state Integrated Crop-Livestock Project
Evaluating the food safety impacts of cover-crop grazing in fresh produce systems to improve cover crop adoption, crop-livestock integration, and soil health This project is funded by the USDA Specialty Crop Multi-State Program grant to look at the benefits of livestock integration through cover-crop grazing on bacterial population dynamics, soil building, and environmental
Farm Animal Risk Mitigation Prevent Prepare Evaluate
The goal of the Farm Animal Risk Mitigation Prepare Prevent Evaluate (FARM PPE) Project is to develop and improve biosecurity measures on livestock and poultry operations of various scales, including alternative agricultural systems (i.e., small-scale, diversified, and backyard farms), through an outreach program to farmers and ranchers as well as other professionals with whom they work
Multi-Regional Risk Analysis of Farm Manure Use Project
Balancing Soil Health and Food Safety for Organic Fresh Produce Production This research collaboration "Multi-Regional Risk Analysis of Farm Manure Use" is a USDA Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI) funded project, focused on furthering the study of the use of animal-based manure in organic agricultural practices in order to best prevent the risk of
