If you spend any time on the internet at all, you’ve probably heard something about Elon Musk’s plans for a new subscription service on Twitter. But what does the new Twitter Blue program actually offer to users?
The most discussed feature so far has been Twitter verification. In the past, Twitter only gave the coveted blue checkmark to public figures, celebrities, journalists and major companies. Whether you would be verified or not was decided by Twitter employees and there wasn’t much room for appeal.
After buying Twitter and taking control of the company, Musk is ready to change all that with a revamp of its Twitter Blue subscription service.
The social network has now begun to roll out an updated subscription that includes verification and the blue checkmark. For the “introductory price” of $7.99 USD per month, you can now get the same symbol of verification that was once reserved for only the most prominent users. The service is available now to iOS users in the U.S. Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. Support for Android and other countries is undoubtedly on its way.
Be aware, however, that once you subscribe to Twitter Blue, you will be unable to change your display name after you receive the blue checkmark. You also are currently unable to subscribe to Twitter Blue with an account created on or after Nov. 9, 2022. Both moves are likely aimed at combating impersonation on the platform.
While the exact shape of Twitter Blue is changing daily as Musk and Twitter figure out a new direction for the company, we do know quite a bit already.
Here are some of the key features other than verification that are either included or coming soon to the subscription service:
The short answer is, it’s uncertain. Twitter says that moving forward the blue checkmark will either mean that a user was verified under the old system or that they have an active subscription to Twitter Blue. That suggests that Twitter isn’t planning on stripping verification from all users who do not subscribe. But it also doesn’t mean that they won’t remove the checkmark from some accounts.
Users who paid for a subscription to the old version of Twitter Blue will be able to upgrade to the new version. If you’re using iOS, you can do that as of Nov. 9, 2022.
If you subscribed to the old version of the service and are not interested in the new one, you can cancel at any time on the platform you originally used to subscribe. Twitter also says that these users will receive information about when their existing subscriptions will automatically expire. So, long story short, the old Twitter Blue is going away.
While plenty of uncertainty remains about Twitter verification and the shape of Twitter Blue in the future, for the first time anyone willing to spend $7.99 USD per month can get themselves that enviable blue checkmark. If you’re looking to up your Twitter game, add new followers or build a brand on the platform, the new subscription service is definitely worth considering.
