Minors and certificates | Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts
Minors A minor provides current students the option to learn similar skills as they complete their major. A minor is an approved, coherent concentration of academic study in a single discipline, involving substantially fewer hours of credit than a corresponding major. Most ASU colleges offer undergraduate minors in addition to majors.

Arizona State University student Ashley Koclanis has loved dance since she was 2 years old, when her parents signed her up for a class to make carpooling with a neighbor easier. The friend dropped out after two weeks, but Koclanis was hooked. “I always knew I wanted to dance,” she said. “Being on stage was everything to me.”This spring, Koclanis is graduating from the School of Music, Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts with a bachelor’s degree in dance.

Caleb Liban has never shied away from competition. The student filmmaker from Denver, who graduates this spring with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in film and media production and a minor in business, is a competitive diver with the Arizona State University Men’s Swim and Dive team, which placed first at conference for four consecutive years and won a national championship in 2024.It’s no surprise that when Liban, 21, learned about a film contest in an innovative medium, he’d crush that, too.

When she heard a radio ad for ASU, however, her interest piqued. It was the consistently top-ranked Barrett, the Honors College and its John Meunier Fellowship Scholarship that really drew her in, and when she learned of the school’s dedication to inclusivity, Tideman Ball committed. “ASU really welcomed me,” she says.

Any given week, Kendall Traylor can be found making the rounds of ceramic studios across the Phoenix metro area, not to fire her own work, but to collect what everyone else has thrown away. Broken bisqueware, cracked shards, fired rejects that didn't survive the kiln; the fragments most artists sweep into the trash are exactly what Traylor is looking for to create her own art. From this refuse, the Long Beach, California, native has built a distinctive art practice at the School of Art in ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.
LA fashion student lands job at jewelry brand Loren Stewart | ASU News
Sydney Hardie graduates from ASU FIDM this spring with a Bachelor of Arts in fashion merchandising and already has a full-time job lined up at Loren Stewart, a fine jewelry brand based in Los Angeles that features pieces handmade in LA and Italy using recycled materials. “I’ve worked really hard to gain experience in so many different corners of the fashion industry while at ASU,” Hardie said.

Dhruv Patel’s buddy knows what he knows, shares his perspectives and even mimics his speech patterns.That’s because Patel created his friend, who is not a human but an “agentic self” — an AI persona that not only completes tasks but actually reflects a person’s values, voice and goals.“I want my agent to be a riffing buddy or a friend I can bounce ideas off of,” said Patel, a third-year computer science student at Arizona State University.
