what

  • Read MODSECURITY_MAJOR, MODSECURITY_MINOR, and MODSECURITY_PATCHLEVEL from headers/modsecurity/modsecurity.h for the Windows CMake project version and generated PACKAGE_VERSION.
  • Register the header with CMAKE_CONFIGURE_DEPENDS so version changes trigger reconfiguration, and require exactly one numeric definition of each component.

Validation performed with CMake 3.24.4 in an isolated fixture using the exact extracted version block, with compiler languages disabled:

  • Reproduced the original 3.0.14 project/package version and verified that the unmodified public header produces 3.0.17, including config.h.
  • Checked multi-digit components, CRLF, spaces, and tabs.
  • Checked nine missing, nonnumeric, and duplicate-definition cases across the three components.
  • Changed only the header and verified that cmake --build automatically reconfigures and updates the version outputs.

A complete ModSecurity/MSVC build was not run locally; repository CI remains the integration check.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Windows builds now take their project version from the public version information instead of a fixed value. Updates to that information are detected during reconfiguration, and invalid or ambiguous version values cause configuration to fail. This keeps the version reported by the Windows build aligned with the version declared by the project.
Read the numeric ModSecurity version components from modsecurity.h,
as configure.ac already does, instead of hard-coding 3.0.14.

Track the header as a CMake configure dependency and fail when a
component does not have exactly one matching numeric definition.

Walkthrough

The Windows CMake configuration now reads version components from the public header, validates their definitions, and uses them to set the libModSecurity project version.

Changes: Windows CMake version detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extract and set project version
build/win32/CMakeLists.txt
CMake requires exactly one numeric definition for each version component and tracks the header as a configure dependency. It uses the extracted values instead of the fixed 3.0.14 project version.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review cb8b3

Windows CMake configuration can accept a conflicting version definition. The risk is narrow; correct the validation before merging if the exactly-one-definition guarantee is required.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Count all definitions before validating the value.

If the header contains #define MODSECURITY_MAJOR "3" followed by #define MODSECURITY_MAJOR "4a", this regex selects only the first line. The duplicate check passes, although the later definition can give compiled code a different version from PROJECT_VERSION. Select all definitions of each component first. Then require one definition and validate its numeric value. (cmake.org)
