Mike Goldsmith

Staff Software Engineer at Honeycomb, working in the open on OpenTelemetry where I'm a maintainer and approver.

Most of my work is in the Collector and the SDKs. I'm a code owner on five components in Collector contrib:

  • adaptivetailsampling keeps traces within a throughput budget and adapts as traffic changes, built with @VinozzZ
  • drain and logdedup cut high-volume log noise
  • schema translates telemetry between semantic convention versions, with a migration mode that writes both the old and new attribute names during a rename
  • the azurelogs translator

Elsewhere I maintain opentelemetry-proto-go, approve on the Python SDK and Python contrib repos, the GenAI instrumentation and the GenAI semantic conventions, and I'm a member of the Sampling SIG. I was a founding maintainer of the eBPF-based Go auto-instrumentation.
