Accessibility: File download control is not keyboard accessible #545

Description

The download control for regular document/file messages is not accessible by keyboard or screen readers.

Unlike audio messages, which now expose proper localized Play and Download buttons, regular files do not expose the download action as a focusable button.

For example, with screen reader software, I can navigate to the file name and file size, but there is no Download button in the normal keyboard navigation order. The download action can only be triggered by locating and clicking the corresponding area with mouse/navigation workarounds.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Telegram Web A with a screen reader such as NVDA.
  2. Open a chat containing a regular document/file, such as a PDF or ZIP file.
  3. Navigate through the message using the keyboard.
  4. Try to locate and activate the Download control.

Actual behavior

The file download control is not exposed as a focusable button.

A screen reader user cannot reliably reach a Download button using normal keyboard navigation. It may be possible to activate the download by manually locating and clicking the corresponding area, but this is not a reliable or accessible interaction.

Expected behavior

The download action should be exposed as a keyboard-focusable button with an accessible name, for example:

Download, button

This could behave similarly to the Download button currently used for audio messages, which is keyboard accessible and has a localized accessible name.

Additional information

The current file component appears to attach the click action to .file-icon-container, while the download icon itself is only visual.

As a result, the control does not appear to provide standard button semantics, keyboard focus, or an accessible name.

Audio messages currently provide a good accessible comparison: their Play and Download actions are exposed as actual buttons and their accessible names are localized.

Environment

  • Telegram Web A
  • Version: 12.0.44
  • Browser: Firefox
  • OS: Windows 11
