Free Digital Learning Campus in Germany brings AI, VR and robotics skills to all ages

In Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, a new Digital Learning Campus is helping people of all ages build confidence with new technologies, from artificial intelligence and virtual reality to robotics and digital tools.

Launched in March 2024, the Digital Learning Campus offers more than 600 free online and in-person courses. The initiative is open to everyone, from pupils and students to adults, professionals and pensioners. No previous technical knowledge is required.

The campus is designed to make digital learning easy to access. Courses and workshops take place not only in educational institutions, but also in everyday places such as shopping centres, markets and gardens. Eleven towns across Schleswig-Holstein are hosting activities, including Lübeck, Kiel, Flensburg, Schleswig, Heide and Neumünster.

The project is also helping young people, including girls, discover future career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In Lübeck, for example, workshops give pupils the chance to explore artificial intelligence, virtual reality and other technologies in a practical and engaging way.

The Digital Learning Campus also includes an online platform, with around 230 courses lasting from one to six hours. Learners can register easily and receive certificates, helping them strengthen their skills for education, work and everyday life.

The project has already reached thousands of learners and aims to become a bridge between schools, universities, companies and citizens. It also has the potential to inspire other European regions looking to make digital skills more accessible and inclusive.

With a total budget of €38 million, the Digital Learning Campus is supported by Schleswig-Holstein, 29 partners including universities and public bodies, and the European Union through Cohesion Policy.

The project was featured in the latest episode of Euronews Smart Regions, showing how EU investment helps regions prepare people for the digital future while ensuring that no one is left behind.
