Many of the ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig researchers are currently attending conferences and summer schools, and we as a center are delighted to be represented at many important events this year. 🌏 From July 19 to 21, the 2nd International Sociohydrology Conference took place in Tokyo. Our colleague Taís Carvalho and her partners from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) attended the event that highlights the importance of collaboration between hydrologists and social scientists. Carvalho presented her work integrating NLP with drought management and adaptation analysis, titled "A global analysis of drought policy documents", and her upcoming junior research group on sustainable water management.

A truly rewarding experience! Together with Sevilay Gulesen I organized and led the third day of the Leipzig Rosetta Workshop 2025 at ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig, focused on immunology and protein design. The program featured lectures on the structure and function of the immune system, computational strategies for vaccine and CAR-T cell design, and hands-on sessions using BindCraft to identify tumor antigens and engineer tailored protein binders. I had the opportunity to give my first full-length scientific lecture and guided an international group of early-career researchers through practical exercises using interactive notebooks I developed. 🏅Outstanding Publication! What if #ExtremeFloods are driven by compounding factors? A study that has been published in Science Advances (Vol. 10, Issue 13, 2024) by Shijie Jiang (Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry), Larisa Tarasova (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ)), Guo Yu (Desert Research Institute) and Jakob Zscheischler (ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ)) addressed this very question. The work presents the first global, event‐level quantification of nonlinear interactions. Using #LightGBM and #SHAP to quantify how rainfall, soil moisture, snowpack & temperature interact, this study reveals "The Secret Network of Extreme Floods." We are pleased to announce that ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig was represented at the International Conference on Machine Learning (#ICML2025) which took place in Vancouver from July 13 to 19 with various contributions. ICML offered a fascinating cross-section of research in the field of machine learning, with a particular focus on the current challenges in training large language models (LLMs). Participants came from a wide variety of fields, including researchers from academia and industry, entrepreneurs and engineers, as well as doctoral and postdoctoral students. I am pleased to share that I participated in the Leipzig Rosetta Workshop (July 2025) in Leipzig, Germany. The workshop provided in-depth training on advanced computational tools for structural biology and protein design, including Rosetta, pyRosetta, AlphaFold, ProteinMPNN, RFdiffusion, and BindCraft. It was an excellent opportunity to enhance my skills and engage in insightful discussions on their applications in therapeutic peptides, enzymes, and drug discovery. My sincere gratitude to Jens Meiler for leading this outstanding workshop, and to Alexander Zlobin, Antonia Sophia Peter, Marija Sorokina, MeilerLab, ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig, and the entire organizing team for creating such a valuable and collaborative program.
