We are going to zero in on the preeminence of Christ today. I’m not getting massively heavy and theological, but I do pray that if you are interested in knowing Jesus, you might learn something. 🙏🏻🌹 And if you’re not interested in this kind of thing, by all means, just skip over it! Doesn’t bother me at all. (But the Trinity sees, knows, and loves you!! 🥰❤️🔥🙌🏻)
“Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross. This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it."
~Colossians 1:15-23
We will narrow our focus, for a paragraph or two anyway, on the bolded sentences. As a believer for 21 years this December, I still lose my breath when I think about how Christ has rendered me innocent of all my sin. Instead of being innocent until proven guilty, I am innocent despite my guilt. He took my guilt and shame. He took it with him on the cross. He paid for it before I even committed it. If that isn’t humbling and mind blowing, I honestly dont know what is. His selflessness and holiness (which we will cover–dont worry!!) erases my selfishness and base, human, carnal instincts. Forever.
The whole point of this passage is to reaffirm Christ’s holiness and supreme authority. He is the Son in the Trinity, but he is still equally God with Yahweh himself. Just because he is the Son and has a Father doesn’t make him insignificant, or less than. People forget that. They hold that Christ was a great teacher, a wonderful humanitarian, but they seem to gloss over his divinity. Which is wrongful and not doctrinally sound.
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
Paul knew what he was writing. Make no mistake, folks.
Jesus often spoke of who he was. “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father” (John 14:9), he said, and let’s not forget: “I and the Father are one!” and, “Before Abraham was, I AM (John 10:30; John 8:58).” When the truth comes from the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, maybe we should listen and take heed.
Jesus is God incarnate. The First–as Paul articulated–but also the Last (Rev. 1:17; Is. 48:12). I can keep going, guys. But I have to wrap this post up. I just sat there in my pew yesterday morning and let my eyes leak all over my face. I think I woke up at 8:00 specifically because God wanted me to hear that message yesterday. It’s not an accident that this passage was preached during my first time in church in a while. Amen? Amen!
Truths to ponder, if you feel led. Let me know if I can pray for you, or if you want to talk about any aspect of faith. Again, it’s one of the purposes of VL! May God bless you this week! 🌹🌹🙏🏻🙏🏻
