    One of the happiest chapters of my life took place in a squatter settlement in the Sonoran Desert in California. Was incredibly tan, walked 10+ miles every day, bathed in a hot spring, lived off oranges, dates, hot dogs, salsa, and Tecate beer. Read a dozen books a month. Rose

    Very bad idea for a writer to live somewhere that is too beautiful. A writer should move to a noisy motel room just off the Jersey Turnpike -- not the Adirondacks. Because up here words seem pointless. I'd prefer to write total silence, or isolation, or sublime emptiness. But in

    It's currently fashionable to hate winter, complain about the snow, etc, but I don't think it's going to last. Really, it wasn't that long ago that people weren't quite so precious about snow and overcast and all that. Automobiles and 9-to-5 jobs have certainly made winter
