  • The Treasury Department is sending $500 refund checks accompanied by letters signed by President Donald Trump to more than 950,000 Americans across 30 states.
  • Trump said the refunds are a return of hard-earned money that he claims was overcharged by the Biden administration during its operation of the federal HealthCare.gov exchange.
  • The financial relief arrives just weeks before the November midterm elections, at a time when health care affordability is a critical concern following the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act premium subsidies.
  • Eligibility is limited to 30 states that rely on the federal health insurance marketplace, leaving out 20 states that run their own exchanges and did not incur federal user fees.
  • The distribution follows recent actions by the Trump administration and Vice President JD Vance to cancel Affordable Care Act enrollments covering 760,000 people over alleged fraud.
