Study mode "does a really great job if you really want to learn a concept and apply that concept and understand it to its fullest potential," says Alaap Nair, a Computer Science undergrad at University of California, Berkeley. On Episode 4 of the OpenAI Podcast, hear from college students and ChatGPT Lab members Yabsera Benyam and Alaap Nair, alongside our Head of Education Leah Belsky, as they explore how AI is transforming education. 🎧 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gHtEFk-k

Today we're introducing study mode, a new way to learn in ChatGPT that offers step-by-step guidance instead of quick answers. As ChatGPT becomes a go-to tool for students to work through challenging homework problems, prepare for exams, and explore new concepts, we’re committed to ensuring it fosters deeper understanding and learning. Study mode is powered by a custom set of instructions that encourage active participation, managing cognitive load, proactively developing metacognition and self reflection, fostering curiosity, and providing actionable and supportive feedback. We're proud to have built study mode in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts to reflect a core set of behaviors that support deeper learning. A special thank you to the ChatGPT Lab for Students who joined us as early testers — Aarnav Verma, Aditi Agni, Alaap Nair, Arik Karim, Caleb Masi, Cecily Chung, Clare Antonow, Elle O Hill, Grant Gutzwiller, Isaac Seiler, Jackson La Vallee, Hexi J., Karina Kejriwal, Keith Curry, Liam Blackshaw-Brown, Luan N., Maggie W., Marianna Manolioudaki, Meghna Goli, Michelle I., Monica Adams, Noah Campbell, Nolan W., Parker Jones, Parv Jain, Praja Tickoo, Rachel Chen, Raghavi Putluri, Rakshan Patnaik, Ryan Growney, Sanjana Garlapati, Sarah Toussaint, Sarayu Reddy, Siddharth Mehta, and Yogya Kalra.

🚀 Introducing Study Mode: A New way to learn in ChatGPT Study mode is designed to help students learn with ChatGPT, not just get answers. It guides users step by step, asking thoughtful questions and adapting to each student’s goals and skill level - much like a tutor would. Built in collaboration with learning scientists, teachers, students, and researchers, Study Mode pushes learners to think more deeply & drive towards learning goals. It is a critical moment for a tool like this. AI’s use in education has raised important questions: how do we ensure AI is used to support real learning, and doesn’t just provide shortcuts? It’s also fueled big dreams - that AI can one day serve as a life-long personal tutor - helping expand human potential and possibility. Study mode is an important step forward towards realizing these dreams. We’ll keep improving it over time - with more visual interactivity, personalization, and deeper model training. I’d love you to try it out, share it with your friends and family, and tell me what you think. 📢 News: OpenAI is coming to Canvas, with a first-of-its-kind AI integration, aimed at empowering educators to shape how AI shows up in the classroom & build more engaging experiences for students. ✏️ Today we announced a new partnership with Instructure. Now teachers can create custom AI-powered activities, starting with LLM-Enabled Assignments, which enable students to share their learning process - not just an end product. Our collaboration is the beginning of a larger journey to empower educators to guide AI use and align it — with their instruction, their curriculum, and sound pedagogy. A huge thanks to Shiren Vijiasingam, Narine Hall, Ph.D., and the Instructure team. Look forward to what's ahead! cc: ChatGPT for Education, Kevin Mills, Keelan Schule, Sophie Rose, Kevin Fives, Matt Wyndowe

📣 Announcing: The National Academy for AI Instruction Early research on AI in the classroom shows both promise and risk. When students use AI to explore, practice, and reflect, AI can deepen learning. But when it’s used as a shortcut or answer machine, it can short-circuit learning. It’s a bit like calculators and math: Used too early, they can undermine foundational skills. But when thoughtfully introduced—by teachers—they unlock new levels of problem-solving. AI has that same double edge. That’s why OpenAI is partnering with the American Federation of Teachers to launch the National Academy for AI Instruction—with $10M in funding and resources to support it. Together, we’ll co-develop tools, surface best practices, and support thoughtful, classroom-ready implementation. Because students are already using AI in amazing ways. By empowering teachers to guide students, we can enable AI to become a catalyst for learning & unlock potential. cc ChatGPT for Education, OpenAI, Chris Lehane, Kevin Mills

New national survey of teachers by Gallup & the Walton Foundation finds that 60% of teachers use AI, and those who use it weekly (about 30% of all teachers) report saving 5.9 hours a week as a result & improving quality, too. Pretty big impact. Also, teachers who use AI like it (teachers who have never used it are more negative)

Here are 3 powerful use cases from our recent Faculty Roundtable in NYC, where 15 professors from a variety of perspectives shared how they integrate ChatGPT into teaching: “Students who can use AI to build and defend their ideas are the ones who stand out.” — Sam Raymond from Dartmouth College 🧠 Sam redesigned his course to help students go from writing Python code to building YC-ready companies. With ChatGPT, students learn through project-based sprints, iterate on fresh product ideas, and use AI to critically reflect on and refine their work. “Lower-performing students became more confident and reflective when using AI, especially in real-world simulations.” — Meghan Reading Turchioe, PhD, MPH, RN, FAHA from Columbia University School of Nursing 🩺 Meghan helps nursing students use ChatGPT to role-play patient interactions, clearly communicate diagnoses and care plans, translate research into patient-friendly summaries, and develop their data science/programming skills. "We need OpenAI to provide more support to educators struggling to change teaching and assessment methodologies to meet the AI moment." — Ellen P. Goodman from Rutgers Law School ⚖️ Ellen raised thoughtful concerns about students potentially skipping foundational legal writing just because ChatGPT can do it. She sparked a broader discussion that explored how AI can enhance — not replace — legal education, through client scenario role-plays, sector-specific research, and ongoing skill development for legal professionals. Thank you to Ahmed Elgammal, Arkapravo Sarkar, Bipasha Ghosh, Charles Lang, Dan Sarofian-Butin, Darshan Desai, Ellen P. Goodman, Joshua Shapiro, Meghan Reading Turchioe, PhD, MPH, RN, FAHA, Panos Ipeirotis, Sam Raymond, Simona Doboli and Yoav Bergner for joining Kara McCloskey Mendes and Siya Raj Purohit in conversation! Did any other use cases or insights stand out to you? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
