VP, Frontier AI Global Affairs at Google DeepMind

One of the best parts of my job at Google DeepMind is the range of cutting-edge developments coming across my desk.  Here are a few highlights from the past couple of weeks: 🏆 Gemini Deep Think achieved gold at the International Math Olympiad! This is a major milestone that seemed unimaginable just a few years ago.  🔒 Big Sleep - our AI agent that actively searches and finds unknown security vulnerabilities in software - was able to predict when a vulnerability was actually going to be used by threat actors, allowing us to cut it off beforehand.  We believe this is the *first time* an AI agent has been used to directly foil efforts to exploit a vulnerability in the wild. 📜 We launched Aeneas, an open-source model that can restore and contextualize Latin text (even with unknown gaps). An exciting leap forward in the integration of AI with the study of ancient history. 🇬🇧 My colleague Pushmeet Kohli was named an advisor to the UK Government for its forthcoming AI for Science strategy. Also two recommendations on things to watch - perfect for those long summer evenings: Demis Hassabis’s interview this week on the Lex Fridman Podcast (https://lnkd.in/g-PZjrEm) The Thinking Game (https://lnkd.in/gz2-97rd)

This is where the future stops being speculative—and starts becoming tangible. Each of these breakthroughs isn’t just a technical achievement; it’s a glimpse into how intelligence, security, and culture are being reshaped in real time. Math competitions, ancient texts, cyber defense—seemingly unrelated domains, now connected by one accelerating force: the applied edge of AI. What’s striking here isn’t just the innovation—it’s the diversity of impact. From safeguarding code to reviving lost knowledge, these developments show that intelligence isn’t limited to problem-solving; it’s becoming context-aware, predictive, and deeply interdisciplinary. Grateful for the teams doing this work. Quietly, they’re redrawing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Aeneas sounds super intriguing, need to go learn more about that.

"The Thinking Game" and "The Big Sleep" show our current progress. Artificial intelligence can not only solve problems, but also reshape the way we think about them. Thanks for sharing

I'm sure we can't even imagine what comes next!

I'm curious how well it works on really fragmented pieces. Did historians test the accuracy too?

Incredible to see how rapidly the frontier is advancing across such diverse domains, from cybersecurity to classical studies. The Gemini IMO win and Big Sleep breakthrough especially stand out. Excited to watch the Lex conversation with Demis this weekend. Thanks for sharing, Tom.

4/5. Ai....? Gemini Deep Think... algorithmic machine learning at it's best. Big Sleep... not so great a tool, until it closes the backdoors that are in nearly every piece of software, but that said a good crime pattern analysis tool. Aeneas a great analytical tool, which learns fast!
