Picture going to a new breakfast cafe in your town, you get inside, sit down, and the server hands you a basket of eggs and some raw sausage. They don't just give you a recipe or bring you into the kitchen. They just hand you all the raw ingredients. You might feel flustered, confused, or angry since you just wanted a prepared breakfast. Without a semantic layer, this might be the experience your business stakeholders would have when trying to get insights from your company's data. The semantic layer is like the menu. It describes the meal to the stakeholder so they can order what they want and receive a nice breakfast instead of raw ingredients. The menu also acts to standardize the options that can come out of the kitchen. French toast is prepared in a similar way each time, similar to how an online click metric definition should be standardized across all reporting with the aid of the semantic layer.
