  • "The Montanist 'Heresy' in Tertullian's De anima"

    North Carolina Religious Studies Association

The early 3rd century C.E. author Tertullian never falls victim to that foolish consistency which is the hobgoblin of small minds. He has been called the “first theologian of the West”, yet he did not attempt to create a theological system. He developed the "rule of faith" (regula fidei) to separate authentic doctrine from heresy, yet he advanced Montanist ideas that would override this authority. He is a passionate, eclectic advocate, and one of the most adventurous ancient authors.

His treatise "On The Soul" (De anima) is one of his most interesting books. Before discussing the treatise, let me answer the question of why one would read an ancient treatise on psychology, written a millenium and a half before Freud and Jung?

The reason is that Tertullian's "On the soul" deals with the big questions: where did the soul come from? Is the soul personality or destiny? Does the soul survive the body's death? He concludes that the soul is created new by God when the human is first conceived, that the soul grows with the body throughout life, and that it survives the body after death. But what's the authority on which these conclusions rest? Tertullian's epistemology is fascinating.

Tertullian, I argue, wrote De Anima from a Montanist point of view. Montanism was an ascetic, ecstatic, pentacostal, movement in the Christian Church in the third century. It's called a heresy, but that's debatable. Its conflict with orthodox Christianity was not over doctrine but how we determine what's authoritative. Do we use tradition, philosophical inquiry, revelation, or a combination? Tertullian argues that revelation is ongoing and available to all believers. From that standpoint he lays out one of the first Christian psychological studies of human nature.

The relevance of this ancient controversy is that this very issue is alive today. We are still arguing the basis for belief -- is it authority, reason, or revelation?

  • Multi-million mailbox migration

    -

This project moved data centers, upgraded servers, storage, and network equipment, as well as moving off a competitors email to Sun. Our co-existence migration model required keeping legacy and target identity repositories in sync throughout the entire process. 5 million user's mail, contacts, vacation/auto-reply, and anti-spam filters were migrated over a 3 month window. The rest of the time was spent in planning, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting each component involved.

  • Distinguished Alumni Fellow

    University of Iowa

The honor included a lecture for the Classics department at Iowa. My topic was this: how can a classical education train you for a career in technology? The answer -- you still have to acquire training in an employment-related skill, but Classics provides the intellectual tools required to learn anything successfully. Classical studies develop skills for rational problem-solving, clear thinking, and clear communications.
