NEXT WEEK: our June EnergyBar is focusing on success stories of FOAK projects our alumni are working on in Canada: Via Separations's first commercial facility for its membrane technology in the Grande Prairie Alberta International Paper mill and Mantel's CCUS project with Kruger Inc. in Trois-Rivieres Quebec. Cameron Halliday and Brandon MacDonald will join a conversation with EY's Kristy Morse and GE Vernova's Limor Spector, PhD about how Via Separations and Mantel decided to pursue opportunities in #Canada and the unique landscape for first-of-a-kind technology deployments. Thanks to Consulate General of Canada in Boston | Consulat général du Canada à Boston for sponsoring this event! Join us on June 5 at Greentown Boston: https://lnkd.in/eCZkmxqn #FOAK #deployment

#FOAK (first of a kind) is everywhere! It's the path between today and impact at scale for many hardware companies like Via Separations. This was especially apparent during SF Climate Week, where Via served as a case study for an insightful FOAK capital stack roundtable hosted by HSBC, Lowercarbon Capital, and Mark1. As we approach 1 full year of operating our first-of-a-kind plant, we are celebrating the wins (97% uptime! 📈 ), learning from the challenges (-40 degree temps 🥶 ), and paving the way for technologies of all types to commercialize and scale (there is no one size fits all 🚀 ). There is a lot to be said on this topic, and even more to be done! Here are a few of our favorite FOAK resources: -FOAK tales: Mario Fernandez (Breakthrough Energy ) articulates some best practices in FOAK design on the Catalyst podcast. So much of this is spot on, and I wish we had this resource years ago when we were negotiating our FOAK contracts. https://lnkd.in/en-MJtck -Decarb Connect: Alex Cameron and David Yeh discuss what it takes to execute on project delivery. We recommend building the team before you build the project! https://lnkd.in/eZyrAPpS -Guidebook for early climate infrastructure: Madison Freeman’s report is full of actionable insights, and features Via as a case study for FOAK deployment. https://lnkd.in/gckaeRas -OCED FOAK report: Alexa Thompson and Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations | U.S. Department of Energy staff detail key similarities and differences across the small number of true commercial FOAK deployments that have been completed to date. https://lnkd.in/evSMDHTq -CTVC FOAK series: Sightline Climate (CTVC) climate’s FOAK series is a must-read, with valuable takeaways from FOAK thought leaders including David Yeh (Precursor) and Julian Ryba-White (Mark1). https://lnkd.in/guKgC-Bs -Via’s FOAK whitepaper: ICYMI, we published a white paper detailing the successful operations of our FOAK deployment in Grande Prairie, AB. We’ve built on the initial publication with several more months of data - reach out to us if you’d like to learn how we can drive process efficiency in pulp & paper, fuels, chemicals, and more. https://lnkd.in/ejW_pEH3
