The solution to homelessness is housing. At URI, we provide a continuum of care—emergency shelter, transitional housing, and permanent affordable homes—because every person deserves safety, dignity, and a real chance to rebuild their life. New York City’s right to shelter is not a loophole—it’s a lifeline. The new executive order to make it easier to remove homeless people from streets doesn’t solve homelessness. It diverts resources, strips away rights, and criminalizes people for being unhoused. Homelessness is not a crime. Shelter is a human right. We will keep building safe, stable housing that promotes dignity and healing because justice looks like people off the streets, in supportive housing, and on a path to stability—not pushed into the shadows. URI's Economic Empowerment Program (EEP) does more than help survivors find jobs—it helps them rediscover their voice, confidence, and purpose. Through job training, financial coaching, and holistic support, participants move from surviving to thriving. This former EEP participant's journey is just one of many that show what’s possible when survivors are met with opportunity, healing, and community. But we can’t do this alone. Donate today to help us continue this life-changing work. Your contribution will fuel even more pathways to safety, stability, and long-term success! https://lnkd.in/eEaMMd9y #EconomicEmpowermentProgram #EconomicJustice #SupportSurvivors #EndDomesticViolence #TogetherWeHealURI

The City of New York is expanding a mental health initiative from 9 to 41 domestic violence shelters, bringing on-site therapy and medication support to more survivors. As one of the earliest participating providers, Urban Resource Institute (URI) helped pilot this program, demonstrating the impact of accessible, on‑site mental health care as part of the continuum of services we provide to survivors. “We need to see more in youth violence prevention, teaching children at a very early age what a healthy relationship looks like and what it doesn't,” said Lauren Schuster, URI’s VP of Government Affairs, who also warned of looming federal cuts threatening the social safety net. With domestic violence rates rising, increased city support is essential to protect survivors and their families. At URI, we know that safety and stability begin with economic independence. That’s why our Economic Empowerment Program (EEP) exists. This past May, we proudly celebrated the graduation of 13 courageous individuals from our Career Exploration Internship Program. 🎓💼 Each graduate overcame extraordinary odds, completing hands-on internships with respected partners across New York City in various industries, including legal services, community care, and even pet grooming. These experiences were not just professional stepping stones—they were symbols of growth, healing, and hope. “These graduates didn’t just complete a program; they stepped into their strength and reshaped their future.” — Olga Laoiza, URI’s EEP Director We’re honored to stand alongside these inspiring individuals as they step into new beginnings! Today's groundbreaking ceremony of theInnovative Urban Village featured remarks from Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams, Reverend A.R. Bernard, and other partners. It marks a milestone for East New York and for all of us committed to safe, community-driven development. As CEO of Urban Resource Institute (URI) and a proud son of East New York, Nathaniel Fields was honored to speak at the launch of the Innovative Urban Village. This visionary partnership with Reverend Bernard, Gotham, and Monadnock is a blueprint for what happens when collaboration meets compassion. With nearly 100 trauma-informed apartments and comprehensive wraparound services, IUV will be a sanctuary for survivors of domestic violence — a place where they can heal, rebuild, and thrive. At URI, we confront the intersection of domestic violence and homelessness every day. Each year, we serve nearly 40,000 individuals with holistic support that empowers safety and stability. This initiative shows what’s possible when we center community. Thank you to all who made it possible.

Why does #PALSforAll matter? Because no one should have to choose between safety and their pet. 🐾 Too often, survivors of abuse or families facing homelessness are forced to leave their pets behind to access shelter or services. For many, that’s not an option—pets are family, comfort, and stability in times of crisis. That’s why URI launched PALS for All: a bold initiative to make NYC’s social services fully pet-inclusive by 2030. Donate and join us in reshaping services so no one is forced to choose between safety and their beloved animal! https://lnkd.in/eEaMMd9y #PALSForAll #URIPALSProgram #PetsAreFamily #KeepFamiliesTogether #PetInclusiveCare #PetFriendlyShelters
