Waterford School's new Murray Science Center, completed in August 2023, represents an impressive integration of sustainable infrastructure, STEM education, and grid innovation. We believe it's the first commercially approved flywheel energy storage system at a school in the country. One of the greatest risks, cyber or otherwise, to the United States is an attack on our grid system. Nate Walkingshaw, CEO of Torus, pointed out below as well as Justin Ling of WIRED recently penned and Andy Greenburg also of WIRED discusses in his book, "Sandworm", in the embedded video. In particular, our nation is incredibly vulnerable and unprepared for an attack at the subtransmission layer. In its 2023 report titled "Cybersecurity High-Risk Series: Challenges in Protecting Cyber Critical Infrastructure", the GAO warned that "The U.S. grid’s distribution systems—which carry electricity from transmission systems to consumers and are regulated primarily by states—are increasingly at risk from cyberattacks. Distribution systems are growing more vulnerable, in part because of industrial control systems’ increasing connectivity. As a result, threat actors can use multiple techniques to access those systems and potentially disrupt operations." SCADA systems are aging and patches are not perfectly managed, particularly in underresourced small and rural utilities. Further, as Nate indicates, the connection points of Distributed Energy Resources ("DERs") and the utilities create new attack surfaces.
