It has been incredibly rewarding to serve as a landscape architect for the new Commonwealth Courts Building in Richmond. Our Timmons Group team has been hard at work weaving the site into the urban fabric of Capitol Square, promoting ecology and accessibility through a pedestrian-centered design. This is an exciting project to be part of, helping to shape a civic space that reflects the dignity and importance of Virginia’s highest courts in the heart of the city. We’re grateful to collaborate with the talented teams at Baskervill and Fentress Studios, a Populous Company, and we can’t wait to see this one come to life!

Meet Zoe Ellsworth, an intern with our Richmond Environmental Risk and Remediation team! Zoe recently graduated from Virginia Tech in May with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Policy and Planning and will return this fall to complete the accelerated 4+1 Master's program in Urban and Regional Planning. This is Zoe's second year interning at Timmons Group, and she's spent the summer diving into Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, exploring GIS mapping, and visiting project sites across the region. "I'm so excited to keep learning and growing in this field, and I'm so grateful to be part of a team that is helping facilitate environmentally responsible projects all across the region," she said. Recently awarded a 2025 Innovation in Park Design Award from the National Recreation and Park Association, Taylor Farm Park is Henrico County's first newly constructed park since the 1980s 🌳 Covering 99 acres, the park features 33 acres of protected wetlands, streams, and resource protection areas used for nature trails, boardwalks, and educational overlooks. Visitors also enjoy a destination skate park, nature-based playground, splash park, recirculating play stream, mist mounds, bike pump track, skills course, and a flexible event lawn. After just one year in operation, Taylor Farm Park has welcomed nearly 1 million visitors. Timmons Group and RHI collaborated on the design and planning of the park, bringing a shared vision to life through extensive civic and stakeholder engagement. Our Baltimore engineering team is proud to have supported the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation on the award-winning Brooklyn Park Athletic Campus in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Completed in collaboration with Lewis Contractors, this impactful project earned a 2024 ABC Greater Baltimore Excellence in Construction Award for its commitment to safety, accessibility, and youth development. The complex features a synthetic turf field with sports lighting, a 400-meter track, tennis and basketball courts, and stormwater solutions that protect the surrounding neighborhoods. The site’s proximity to the active Brooklyn Park Middle School meant close coordination throughout construction to ensure student activities continued uninterrupted—just one of the many ways our team prioritized the community every step of the way. Site development is currently underway for the Foundation’s next project—a new synthetic turf soccer field that will increase the park’s acreage and offer additional field space for the community. Wasena Park in Roanoke, Virginia, is getting a major upgrade! A new 24,000-square-foot skatepark is in the works for skaters of all skill levels. The new skatepark will feature street skating elements, a pump track, new landscaping, sidewalk connections, and enhanced accessibility 🛹 Timmons Group is proud to support this project by providing stormwater management and erosion & sediment control design services. Working closely with the City of Roanoke, VA, and the skatepark designer, our teams have helped navigate permitting timelines, budget considerations, and long-term maintenance planning to ensure the success of this new regional park. With an expected completion date in the next several months, we can't wait to see skaters take advantage of this incredible new community space! 🌲As Dix Park continues its major transformation, protecting the historic trees around the campus is just as important as addressing existing features. We went on site with Caleb Robinson, PLA, LEED GA, a Landscape Architect and Certified Arborist at Timmons Group, to learn how our team is working with the Dix Park Conservancy and City of Raleigh Municipal Government to help preserve mature trees during this campus-wide restoration. Timmons Group is working alongside the City’s Urban Forestry staff to identify and protect high-value trees.
