Star Mountain Capital is celebrating National Intern Day and the contributions of its summer interns. This year, over 25 interns from 9 universities joined the New York and Tampa offices, working across departments such as Portfolio Management, Direct and Secondary Investments, Investor Relations and Technology. The program runs year round, with the summer session including a weekly private credit course led by the firm’s General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer and adjunct University of Miami professor, Austin Ericson. More than 50% of Star Mountain’s junior team began as interns, reflecting the firm’s commitment to developing talent from within. Thank you to our interns for your hard work, curiosity, and impact. Star Mountain Capital congratulates Jared Solomon on being named EY Entrepreneur Of The Year. We’re proud to support him and the Five Iron Golf team as a valued portfolio company.
Honored to be named an EY Entrepreneur Of The Year in New York. From 2014 to 2016, we spent 18 months trying to find real estate—tour after tour, rejection after rejection—doing everything we could to convince someone to lease us space in Manhattan for an indoor golf concept with a liquor license. It wasn’t just a long shot. It was inventing something that didn’t exist—especially in a world where NYC landlords would rather lease to a CVS or Starbucks than a few unknowns pitching golf simulators and alcohol. After about a year, I was drained. It felt impossible. But Katherine Solomon and Nora Dunnan? They never blinked. They don’t blink. They’ve got motors that don’t stop—and they weren’t going to let this die. Then there’s Mike Doyle. One of the top teaching pros in New York, Mike was doing just fine with private lessons. But he bet on us. He took a 0/100 split—literally giving up every dollar from his lessons to help us pay rent. No golf pro does that. But Mike did. Because he believed in the vision, even when it was barely a sketch. In those early days, we heard it all: “This is crazy.” “What on earth are you talking about?” “None of you have any relevant experience.” They weren’t wrong. Entrepreneurship is lonely. There’s a painful singularity to it. You feel like you’re carrying everything on your back—and no one’s coming to help. That’s why you need people who refuse to let it die. You need a Katherine. A Nora. A Mike. Because most of the time, it’s brutal. And if it’s not fun—and you don’t like who you’re doing it with—you’re probably screwed. Like golf, building a business breaks you down and makes you better—if you let it. You’ll end up in the weeds. You’ll misread the wind. But you keep swinging. Fast-forward to today: Five Iron Golf is in 15 states and five countries—from Australia to Dubai—and the idea that golf is for everyone doesn’t sound so crazy anymore. Thank you to: • Katherine, who’s supported every wild idea I’ve ever had • Nora, who’s done every job at Five Iron—and is better at all of them than anyone else ever will be • Mike, an entrepreneur and innovator with uncanny instincts for service and hospitality—the foundation of Five Iron • My parents, who never pushed me toward the “safe” path • And my daughter Penelope, who handed me this note when she was 4, and I still carry it in my wallet: “cepon goin with yr pas sals” (translation: “Keep going with your puzzles.”) And really—aren’t we all just trying to keep going and solve puzzles every day? This award means a lot. But the people behind it mean even more. I’m lucky to have them in my corner—and even luckier to build something that still makes me excited to show up and figure it out, day after day.
