At the Biocom Conference, someone asked if unlimited vacation still carries weight when it comes to attracting and retaining talent. I remember when this was a big headline benefit especially in the tech industry. It sounds amazing, but I was never sure how it would truly work in practice or if it could be beneficial for both the company and employees. The answer we heard was clear: unlimited vacation is losing traction - Dead Data shows employees often take fewer days off under this model compared to when they had a set PTO bank. When people see vacation time on the books, they are more likely to use it because they feel they have earned it. There are pros and cons to both approaches, but it really comes down to how each program is explained and communicated so that employees understand and feel comfortable using it. Personally, I have always leaned toward a "bank" of vacation, knowing I could plan ahead and take time off with minimal resistance since it was already accounted for. Plus, I've always had a large bank of vacation - which is a whole nothing problem for my therapist!
