Advancing Veteran and public health through innovative research

About us

PAVIR is the second largest of VA-affiliated not for profits. Located on the premises of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, PAVIR is a mid-size nonprofit foundation, closely connected with the VA and Stanford University. The VA Palo Alto produces some of the highest quality research in the Federal System, and PAVIR is viewed by its 80+ Principal Investigators as a vital partner. PAVIR fulfills its mission by engaging in $30M+ of sponsored medical research funded by the NIH, DoD, other federal agencies, state agencies, foundations, and industry. We are proud of our 31-year history of service to Principal Investigators, VAPAHCS and the staff we employ. Most of PAVIR's 200+ employees directly work on over 100 different research projects aimed at improving health care. PAVIR's core office provides investigators and their labs with valuable administrative services, such as Contract & Grant administration (both pre-award and post-award), Human resources, Accounting, and Purchasing. At PAVIR we work with many uniquely talented medical scientists. Our researchers have an active appointment with the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and most maintain academic appointments with Stanford University. We recruit and retain talented employees who believe in making a difference in the lives of others through innovative health research. Interested in joining our Research Community? • 🎉 Celebrating 100 Years of VA Research We’re proud to spotlight Stacy Moeder, whose impact is deeply felt across PAVIR and VA communities. “Scientific expertise has taken a backseat in our recent environment and our challenges are not hypothesis but resource driven. In this time of need, Stacy has provided unlimited, comprehensive, continuous and innovative support to not just individual researchers but to entire labs and departments. When you arrive with a problem at her door, you leave not just with a solution but a feeling that she will take care of it - personally.” ~ Maheen Adamson, PhD, Director of Research WOMEN “Stacy is an essential part of our research team, helping with so many aspects of administration. This rare and prestigious recognition highlights practices that are not only innovative and creative but also produce outstanding clinical and operational results that benefit the entire field of rehabilitation.   📄 From CARF’s report: “The Polytrauma System of Care of VAPAHCS demonstrates exemplary conformance in its research efforts and support of the education of its staff. Over the past three years, a new building was designed, the team relocated to it less than 12 months ago. Simultaneously, the team continued to focus on research with 28 ongoing and new projects, presenting more than 171 abstracts and posters at various conferences as well as having 80 publications.” Research areas include: * Long-term effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) * Sex and gender factors in rehabilitation * Virtual reality applications in TBI care * Headache management and wellness programming * And most recently, disorders of consciousness in collaboration with Stanford Medicine   📚 With partnerships across 32+ academic institutions, VAPAHCS is also shaping the future of rehabilitation by mentoring the next generation of clinicians through internships and residencies.   What makes this achievement even more remarkable? These accomplishments were driven by 85 dedicated staff members—all of whom are also engaged in direct patient care. Their commitment to integrating research into daily practice is a model for excellence in the field.   👏 Please join us in congratulating the entire VAPAHCS team for this extraordinary milestone.
