Last week, in partnership with the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), NSF proudly awarded Girvin Liggans, Ph.D., REHS/RS, DAAS, the Walter F. Snyder Environmental Health Award for his decades-long contributions to the advancement of public and environmental health. Dr. Liggans serves as the Deputy Director for Plant Derived Foods in the Office of Microbiological Food Safety at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Throughout his career, Dr. Liggans has published more than 80 FDA position papers on retail food safety and his research on Listeria monocytogenes, norovirus transmission and food safety management systems has informed regulatory strategies nationwide. Since 1971, the Snyder Award has honored NSF's co-founder and first executive director, Walter F. Making improvements in food safety is in NSF's DNA. 🧬 From our beginnings in 1944 to the present day, innovation drives us, which is why we're proud to announce NSF's MOAH-Free Certification for food industry materials. MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons) compounds are recognized as potential carcinogens when they contain three or more aromatic rings. They can contaminate the food supply through machinery lubricants, release agents, processing aids, and migration from food contact materials, such as sealants, adhesives, and more. Our MOAH-Free Certification helps reduce the presence of MOAH compounds in the food production chain, ensuring that materials with the certification have: - Less than 100 ppm of MOAH content - No mineral oil, paraffin, naphthenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or wax are intentionally added - Manufacturing facilities have procedures to minimise contamination Learn more about the certification and its benefits at the 🔗 in the comments!
