About us
The New England Aquarium is a catalyst for global change through public engagement, commitment to marine animal conservation, leadership in education, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy for vital and vibrant oceans. It is the only Boston-based cultural institution with a mission focused primarily on the environment, promoting the importance of protecting the blue planet through innovative exhibits and educational programs. These are some highlights of the Aquarium’s mission in action, on exhibit, and through our education, conservation, and research programs here on Central Wharf and around the globe. -The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank and the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center showcase the diversity and importance of marine animals. -The Giant Ocean Tank inspires visitors with the beauty and complexity of marine habitat through replication of a Caribbean coral reef. -Aquarium educators lead a nationwide initiative on climate change and inspire future ocean protectors with hands-on programs such as Harbor Discoveries Camps and live blue™ Ambassadors. -The Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Team leads regional efforts to rehabilitate and release endangered species of sea turtles at our state-of-the-art Animal Care Center. -Aquarium scientists advise some of the nation’s largest seafood companies on methods to enhance the sustainability of commercial fisheries worldwide. -The Aquarium is home to the world’s longest-running right whale research program, coordinating efforts along the East Coast of the U.S. to restore the population of this endangered species. -The Aquarium collaborates with partners around the world to protect ocean ecosystems, such as coral reefs. In 2008, we partnered with the island nation of Kiribati and Conservation International to create the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. “For the first time, Sharks International 2026 (SI2026) is being hosted in Asia, which, combined with the incredible ease of accessing Sri Lanka through an online visa system, relatively low travel costs, and subsidised registration rates, makes attendance more accessible to a huge swath of participants who have historically faced high travel barriers.” – Daniel Fernando The Aquarium's Marine Conservation Action Fund (MCAF) is proud to be a sponsor of SI2026 through a multi-year grant supporting MCAF Fellow Daniel Fernando and his organization, Blue Resources Trust, as they plan the conference. One of the ways MCAF supports fellows and project leaders is through grants for conference travel, which provide opportunities critical for knowledge exchange, networking, and professional development. Who run the reefs? Girls! 🥰 This International Women's Dive Day, we're celebrating the fierce women making waves at the Aquarium. While women make up less than 40% of recreational scuba certifications worldwide, they make up 62% of our Aquarium dive team! Now that’s what we call turning the tide. Today, we celebrate and encourage people of all genders, ages, races, backgrounds, and abilities to dive in and explore the ocean! #WomensDiveDay #LetsGoGirls #WomenWhoDive

Bye, friends! 🥹🐢 After months of care at our Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy, these previously cold-stunned sea turtles are now back in the ocean. In total, seven sea turtles were released yesterday: two critically endangered Kemp's ridleys, three loggerheads, and two green sea turtles. Of those, four turtles were satellite tagged for post-release monitoring. Way to go, team! #SeaTurtleRelease #SeaTurtleRescue #SeaTurtles

Earlier this year, the BalanceBlue Lab team at our Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life attended Seafood Expo North America (SENA) in Boston! 🍤🌎 There, they networked with collaborators from all over the world, attended panels—and scoured booths, demonstrations, and product samples to find the newest seafood trends (and treats) that could inform future conservation conversations and initiatives. From caviar alternatives to tasty invasive species, check out some of the coolest things they saw in responsible seafood at SENA this year: https://bit.ly/440VPvc #SeafoodExpo #SENA #AndersonCabotCenter #BalanceBlueLab

We were proud to participate in the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France—a global gathering of ocean advocates, scientists, and policymakers working toward a healthier, more sustainable ocean! 🌎 Members of the Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life team joined thought leaders from around the world to help shape the future of sustainable shipping and marine protection. Some highlights from the conference: • Sarah Reiter, associate vice president of ocean conservation practice, was invited to a high-level roundtable focused on making shipping safer for marine life, highlighting the Aquarium’s research on how slowing ships can reduce deadly whale strikes. • Elizabeth Stephenson, director of the Aquarium's Marine Conservation Action Fund (MCAF NEAq), co-hosted a workshop on scaling Marine Protected Area capacity to reach the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, with a focus on local leadership and equity in conservation. • Kerstin Forsberg, founding director of Planeta Oceano and a Fellow with the Aquarium's Marine Conservation Action Fund, was a panelist on "Empowering Local Action for Global Ocean Governance: Solutions for Biodiversity," which featured case studies from seven countries on how local action is shaping global policy. • The Costa Rica Pavilion at UNOC featured the creation of the country’s first shark sanctuary, an effort led by MCAF Fellow Andrés López and Project Leader, Ilena Zanella, co-founders of Misión Tiburón. From collaborative panels and workshops to creative events blending art, science, and storytelling, the conference underscored a key message: protecting our ocean takes collaboration, creativity, and community! #UNOceanDecade #OceanConference #AndersonCabotCenter #MarineConservationActionFund

“Each North Atlantic right whale holds a rich legacy, and it is our role to remember, acknowledge, respect, and protect these animals.” 🐳 Since 1980, the New England Aquarium and our Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life have led research efforts on the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. It’s work that began over 40 years ago in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, and today utilizes cutting-edge tech to help protect right whales in New England and beyond.
