Our fourth and final operating principle determines how we work. At Medium, we move forward in rapid, incremental, impactful steps that connect to each other. We have a bias towards action, but not just for the sake of activity. This style of working creates a drumbeat of progress. Our second operating principle is also core to our mission. Internally, we approach projects and problems with curiosity. We get context, ask questions, analyze data, and take time to understand different opinions. On our platform, stories that deepen understanding are the ones that break through. When writers share their personal wisdom, we all benefit—as readers, as community members, and as humans.

Some companies have values. We have operating principles—because they actually inform how we operate. What does "Humans first" mean? It means we respect the time and attention of our reader and writer communities; we recommend the most informed writers, not the loudest; we put humans before AI; we protect our community of readers and writers; and we promote deeper understanding, not misunderstanding or division.
