Omaha’s been spoiled with single-stream recycling – the easy, toss-it-all-in-one-bin system. But here’s the problem: one leaky soda can and that perfectly good paper and plastic can end up trashed instead of recycled. That’s contamination, and it’s a big reason why so much recyclable material winds up in the landfill. Switching to dual-stream recycling changes the game. 🌱 By keeping cardboard and paper separate from plastics and metals, businesses can drastically reduce contamination, keeping more items in the loop. Plus, it lightens the load for recycling facilities, making the whole process more efficient. At Hillside Solutions, we’re teaming up with First Star Recycling to make sure every item is processed the right way. It’s a simple change that powers up local recycling and helps businesses crush their sustainability goals with confidence. 💪 #RecycleRight #EcoWins #SustainableBusiness

Earth Day Omaha is the city’s biggest annual celebration of the environment — a day packed with music, food, vendors, and community action at Elmwood Park. Last year, they made history. 2024 marked the first-ever Zero Waste Earth Day Omaha event! 🎉♻️ How did they do it? They partnered with us to set up Zero Waste Stations across the event, staffed by amazing volunteers who helped educate people on what goes where. We also worked with vendors ahead of time to make sure they were minimizing waste and composting or recycling as much as possible. Because of their leadership and commitment to making sustainability a real action (not just a buzzword), we’re proud to recognize Earth Day Omaha with the Zero Waste Event Eco Award! 🌎✨

Can I recycle plastic bags? Where do I take leftover paint? Are chicken bones compostable? When you're standing by the bin wondering "Can I recycle this or not?" — there wasn’t always a fast, easy way to find out. Omaha needed a better solution. Something clear. Something quick and easy to use. That’s where Maddy Wahl comes in. She created the Omaha Recycling Guide — a super simple tool that tells you exactly what goes where, no confusing lists or endless internet searches required. No more guessing. No more standing there stuck. Just clear answers, right at your fingertips. Thanks to Maddy, recycling in Omaha is easier, smarter, and way less stressful. Every year, we look forward to guests bringing us their Hefty® ReNew® bags filled with soft plastics at @earthdayomaha. One visitor handed us a tightly packed bag—it looked like a giant pellet! We were thrilled to see that was all the plastic they'd accumulated since last year. 👏 . What's the "Orange Bag" program all about? Here's some FAQs. 💪What goes in the orange bag? Chip bags, foam containers, plastic utensils, bread bags, and other hard-to-recycle plastics. 💪 Where does it go? Right here in Omaha! First Star Recycling transforms these materials into durable plastic lumber for benches, decks, and more. 💪Why it matters: By collecting soft plastics, you're keeping waste out of landfills and giving it new life. 💪Get started: Pick up Hefty® ReNew® bags at local retailers, Menards and Target. Fill them with accepted items and place them in your curbside recycling bin/dumpster.
