About us
Habitat for Humanity is a movement of people in your local area and around the world, working together to build more prosperous and vibrant communities by making sure everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home. Since our founding in 1976 as a Christian organization, together we have helped more than 62 million people in countries around the world build their futures on their own terms through access to decent housing. We’ve done that by working alongside people of all walks of life to build, repair and finance their homes, by innovating new ways of building and financing, and by advocating for policies that make constructing and accessing housing easier for everyone. Together, we build homes, communities and hope. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

In Mexico, 11 EDGE-certified homes were recently completed in Monte Sión, a mountain community in Chiapas that was founded by Indigenous families displaced by conflict. The completed homes are part of the Lekil Na’ project, which means “sustainable housing” in the residents' native Tzotzil. These homes were partially built using RESIN8™, a technology that transforms non-recyclable plastic waste into concrete blocks and floors, and feature solar panels and boilers. Hábitat para la Humanidad México provided training so that the new homeowners could take advantage of built-in eco-technologies and effectively maintain the homes. Learn more in this video from EDGE Buildings, one of multiple partners involved in this project. https://lnkd.in/eiSR9bDf

"Evidence shows that housing is more than just four walls and a roof – it’s health, education, economic opportunity and the foundation for a better future." Read more from our CEO Jonathan Reckford, reflecting on his appearance at the United Nations' High-Level Dialogue on Adequate Housing for All.
It was an honor to be invited to speak at the United Nations High-level Dialogue on Adequate Housing for All by Honorable Ambassador Bob Rae and Madame Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach about the need for greater priority in international development financing. Habitat for Humanity International’s research shows that large-scale housing upgrades in informal settlements could increase GDP by up to 10.5% in some countries, save roughly 730,000 lives each year globally and could boost women’s health. Within a year, improved housing could result in 20 million illnesses prevented and 42 million incidents of gender-based violence prevented. Evidence shows that housing is more than just four walls and a roof – it’s health, education, economic opportunity and the foundation for a better future. We stand ready to work with public and private stakeholders to unlock transformative change and ensure that everyone has a safe and decent place to call home. #HomeEquals

📉 The lowest number of existing home sales since 1995. ⌛ A record-high median age for first-time buyers (38 years). 💰 The monthly mortgage payment on a median-priced home in the U.S. hit a record high of $2,560, roughly 40 percent higher than in 1990 even after adjusting for inflation. Read researcher Daniel McCue's reflection on the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies' recently released State of the Nation's Housing report that included these and other milestones set in 2024. https://lnkd.in/eFCNbGBX
