And we were thrilled to see it on full display at the 2025 Opening Act Annual Gala, “Creating a Legacy,” at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. “As always, this was such an inspiring event from start to finish,” says ECLARO Co-Founder Tom Sheridan. “It’s great to be part of an evening that celebrates the power of storytelling and the impact of giving back to our local communities, as well as recognizing the many people who have contributed their talent and time toward helping the next generation of New York City artists find their voice.” There’s so much we could say about Opening Act, but first we’re happy to share how they say it themselves: “Committed to closing the arts education access gap in NYC, Opening Act centers the voices of students of color through free, high-quality theatre programming. Since inception in 2000, they have grown to reach over 7,000 young people at 53 under-resourced schools throughout New York City. This includes a partnership with District 79, the city’s alternative school district, and expansion into middle school. After graduation, Opening Act alumni join the Act 2 program, which sets them up for academic, professional, and artistic success.” Amid the performances by Opening Act students and alums, and the honors that were presented to Lincoln Center Theater Education, the Find Your Light Foundation and acclaimed actor, advocate and Academy Award nominee Clarence Maclin—if you haven’t seen his performance in "Sing Sing," you need to go watch it the minute you’re done reading this—the night was filled with an incredible energy that guests felt long after the night ended. “It’s a thrill to spend time at the gala with Sara Johnson, Ashia Johnson, MBA (she/her) and Sidney Johnson CPSM and all the people who come together to celebrate Opening Act’s dedication to helping some of New York City’s most under-resourced students, and to witness the impact this organization has on inspiring creativity and the power of community,” says ECLARO Co-Founder Paul Sheridan. “Here’s a toast to the board, the staff, all the supporters, the teaching artists, the alums and, of course, the students.
